To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIGE AGNESS FLYNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in thecounty of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clown-Dolls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in toys and more particularly to a clown doll.

One object of the invention is to provide a toy of this character which will be highly amusing to young children, which will be practically indestructible and at the same time comparatively inexpensive to produce, and which may be made to assume a sitting posture by reason of the peculiar construction of its arms and legs which are adapted to engage each other.

Another object of the invention is to improve the construction, and particularly the manner of constructing the limbs and body portion of the doll whereby it may be produced at a small cost and will be exceedingly strong and durable.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved clown doll; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same in sitting posture; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the doll with its dress removed; Fig. 4 is a view of the body showing the manner of constructing and folding the casing of the body; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views.

The present embodiment of my invention is in the form of a clown doll which has a body 1, lower limbs or legs 2, upper limbs or arms 3, a head 4: and preferably, a suitable dress 5. In the present instance this dress is that of a clown, but it will be understood that it may be of other style and constructed otherwise than as illustrated in the drawing. When the doll is dressed to resemble a clown its head is preferably constructed as illustrated and ornamented to give it a grotesque appearance.

The several parts of the doll are constructed of suitably shaped fabric casings stuffed with cotton or other soft yielding material so that all parts will be flexible and can not readily be broken by bending or pulling the doll, or by the rough usage to which such toys are subjected. By thus constructing the parts of the doll it'may be made to assume various postures and to perform for the amusement of children; and in order to enable it to be placed in sitting posture and to further add to the attractive grotesque appearance of the toy, I construct its feet 6 of open, circular shape so that they will receive the arms 3. The feet 6 are, of course, integral with the legs 2 and have their ends or toe portions 7 turned upwardly and inwardly or rearwardly so that they contact the legs 2 and give the foot the open circular shape above mentioned. This peculiar shape of the feet permits them to re ceive or interlock with the arms 3 and thereby enable the doll to be placed in an upright sitting position, the arms being prevented from slipping out of the feet by reason of enlarged, flattened, spherical hands 8 which are formed on the extremities of the arms 3.

In constructing the body 1 of the doll I make a substantially rectangular bag or casing 9 out of suitable fabric or other soft material and then fold its lower corners transversely to form outwardly and downwardly projecting tabs 10 to which the legs 2 are secured, as presently explained. The open top of the bag or casing 9 is then formed on each side with end folds 11 to contact the open top or neck of the bag or casing, and between these end folds and to the opposite side portions of the open upper edge of the bag is secured the upper extremities of the arms 3, the said parts being sewed together, as shown at 12. The arms and their hand members are composed of fabric casings 13 filled with a stuffing 14 of cotton or other material and these parts are, of course, stufied before the upper extremities of the arm casings 13 are sewed beneath the hand folds 11 at the neck of the body casing. Before the body is stuffed the legs 2 are attached to the tabs 10, said legs with their integral feet being also composed of fabric casings 15 stuffed with a soft material 16. The upper ends of the leg casings 15 are closed by stitching and united by stitching 17 to the tabs 10, which latter are of triangular shape and the stitching 17 arranged around and adjacent to the free edges of the tabs so as to firmly unite the legs to the body. After the arms and legs have been thus attached to the body the latter is stuffed with cotton or other soft material 18, and

its open top is sewed together as indicated at 19. The head 4 which is composed of a tapered or pointed fabric bag or casing 20 and a stufling of soft material 21, has its While I have shown and described in de tail the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction, may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A doll having a body and arm and leg members, said members being constructed to engage and interlock.

2. A doll having a body, arms flexibly united thereto and having enlarged hand members, legs flexibly attached to said body and having feet formed with upturned, hookshaped toes adapted to receive the arms whereby the body of the doll may be supported in upright sitting posture.

3. A doll comprising a flexible body, a flexible head attached to the top of the body, flexible arms loosely connected to the upper side portions of the body and having their extremities formed with enlarged hand members, flexible legs attached to the lower side ortions of the body and formed with large feet-members having upwardly and inwardly turned toe portions, the latter being adapted to receive the arms for the purpose specified.

4. A doll having a body composed of a substantially rectangular casing having its lower corners folded transversely to provide tabs and the portions at the opposite sides of the open top of the bag folded inwardly, flexible leg members secured to the tabs at the bottom of the body casing, flexible arm members having their upper ends secured to the opposite sides of the body casing beneath said end folds, and a head secured over the open top .of the body casing.
