To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, `Bessin M. WEATHERLY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Doll, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dolls and more particularly to clown dolls.

The object of the invention is toprovide a doll of this character which is amusing to young children and which may be `used by grown-ups as an ornamental pin cushion.

Another object is to provide sucha doll which is inexpensively produced and which may be made to assume a sitting posture by reason of its peculiarly shaped body andthe combined ornaments and props carried thereby and the peculiar connection of the legs thereto.

Another object is to provide such a doll the hands and feet of which are suspended by flexible elements to adapt them to kick and swing freely to simulate dancing when the doll is moved bodily or shaken.

With these and other objects in view, `the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated the doll is shown in the form of a clown and comprises a body l substantially rectangular in form having a blunt lower end 2 to adapt it to sit in upright position as shown in Fig. 3. This body is preferably composed of a casing 3 of any suitable fabric stuffed or filled with any suitable filling, cotton or other soft material 4 being preferably used. A head 5 is also composed of a stuffed fabric casing properly shaped to represent a human head and which is fastened to the upper end of the body by stitching having a substantially rigid connection therewith so that the head will not `wabble when the Vbody is moved. This head 5 may be decorated in any suitable manner and a face having any desired characteristics may be printed thereon. A clowns cap 6 is here shown fiXedly secured to the head 5 and has a peaked upper end 7 with stiifening disks 8 and 9 secured to opposite sides thereof to forni combined ornaments and stiffeners for the cap.

Suspending from the lower end of the body or trunk are feet 10 the legs which connect them with the body being in the form of limp fabric members 1l. These legs l1 as shown are composed of a single strip of woven fabric secured intermediate its ends to the lower end of ,the body and having the feet 10 attached to the terminals thereof.

n Hands l2 are connected by similar tapelike strips 13 to the upper portion of the body to form limber or limp arms. This peculiar connection of the hands and feet ermit them to swing and kick freely w en the body is suspended and. oscillated or shaken, a resilient suspension strapla being preferably attachedto the peakof the cap for this purpose.

The body and limbs of this doll are incased in a suitable dress l5 which is preferably that of a clown although not necessarly so. This dress is made bifurcated and in one piece with the lower ends of the legs gathered and secured firmly to the ankles at a point below the connection of the limbei' legs therewith. The sleeves are similarly constructed and attached to the hands 12 at the wrist. The neck portion of the garment is also gathered tightly around the neck and secured, being here shown ornamented with a rufHe although it may obviously be otherwise decorated.

Stitched or otherwise suitably attached to the front of the dress l5 are two longitudinally alined disks 17 and 18 of any suitable or desired size composed of fabric covered cardboard or other suitable material having sufficient rigidity to adapt the disks to operate as props when the doll is arranged in sitting posture. These disks are spaced apart a suilicient distance to permit the dress 15 to move freely and yet when the doll is placed in sitting posture as shown in Fig. 3 their adjacent ends or pcrimeters will abut and the lower disk resting at a diametrically the head or in both.
