lie, it known that l, GnmYs Goss, a citizen of e United States, and a resident of Nevada, in the coimty of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jointed Rag Dolls; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j i

This invention relates to improvements in toy dolls and has for an object to provide. a novel form of jointed rag doll whose arms and legs may. be freely moved, as may be desired.

it is also an object of this invention to provide a doll of the character mentioned, certain of the oints of which are movable in one direction only, and the feet of which are of size and shape such as will permit the doll to stand alone in a realistic manner, pleasing to the child playing therewith; the oncqvey movement of the oints of the legs occurring at the knees thereof and serving to maintain those portions of the legs substantially rigid in one direction, whereby to facilitate the standing position of the doll. I

A further object of the invention may be stated to reside in the novel representation of hair upon the dolls head, consisting of stitching so applied as to resemble hair.

Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.

In order that the invention and its mode of application may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out a preferred embodiment of the same.

drawings, in connection with which like characters'of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the body of the doll is indicated bythe numeral 1 and has secured adjacent the shoulder portions thereof arms 2, the connection between the shoulders and the arms being effected by stitching 8 which is so arranged as to permit of swinging movement of the arms from the shoul dcrs. Atthe elbows of the arms 2 oneway hinge joints e are formed by stitching the several sections of these arms, namely, the upper and fore portions thereof, together adjacent the forward sides of the same, as at5, the adjacent ends of said portions of the arm being flat to permit of arrangement thereof in substantially parallel relationship. By reason of the hinged connection between the upper end fore portionsof the arms 2, it will beunderstood thatthe fore portions thereof will be permitted to swing forward with respect to the upper portions, but that rearward swinging of these fore portions will be prevented, since the free fiat adjacent ones of the several portions will meet, and by consequence, form effective stops.

The head 6 of the doll is of semicircular configuration, and is padded with suitable material. as are the body and arms. Rows of parallel stitching, commonly known as embroidery, are arranged on the head of the doll to represent hair, and by different forms or arrangement of this embroidery, it will be appreciated that different forms or styles of hair-dress may be effected. The head, of course, is supplied with the usual facial characterization, as is common in the coi'istruction and manufacture of rag dolls.

Legs 8 are provided the doll and they consist of cloth-covered padded members, which are stitched at their upper ends to the lower portions of the body 1 in a manner to permit of swinging movement therebetween. These legs 8 are formed in sections, which are jointed at the knees. by stitching 9, such joints corresponding to the joints formed at the elbows of the several arms 2 of the doll. Thus, it will be understood that rearward swinging of the logs from the knee down will be permitted, and that forward swinging thereof from the knees down will be prevented by reason of the engagement between the adjacent flat ends of the leg sections.

The feet 10 of the doll are somewhat enlarged in comparison with the body thereof, and are made flat on their bottoms by the arrangement of flat pieces of cardboard 11 therein, thus offering a substantial footing or base for the doll upon which same may stand alone. Shoes 12 may be arranged upon the feet 10, and are provided with fiat soles 13 corresponding to the flat cardboard inserts 11 on the. feet in order that the ability of the doll to stand alone will not be detracted from.

By reason of the formation of the feet 10 of my improved jointed rag doll, and by reason of the novel form of joints occurring at the knees ofthe legs 8 thereof, it will be understood that the doll will be enabled to stand alone, since slight forward movement of the body 1 of the doll will be permitted in order that the adjacent flat ends of the sections of the legs may engage each other. Upon such engagement, the legs will be rendered substantially rigid as to forward movement of the body with relation to the leg portions thereof, and therefore, the doll will be balanced in its standing position and enabled to stand alone.

By the novelarrangement of hinges at the elbows of the arms, the movements of the doll Lwill berendered more realistic, since while free forward movement of the fore portions of the arms will be permitted. any rearward movement of these portions with relation to the upper portions will be .prevented, corresponding to the human.

Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification, and such modification as is within the scope of my claims,- I consider within the spirit of my invention.

.Iclaim:

l. A rag doll having the feet thereof fla and braced by flat strips of inflexible material corresponding to the soles of the feet and shoes for said feet having flat soles corresponding to the shape of the inflexible material, said feet being enlarged whereby to support the body portion of the doll in a vertical position.

2. A doll comprising a body, arms and legs joined by stitching to appropriate portions of said body, and swingable with relation thereto, said arms and legs being formed in sections jointed at. the elbow and knee portions of each by single rows of stitching arranged adjacent certain of the sides of each of the corresponding ends whereby to permit of swinging motion of the free portions of said arms and legs in but one direction, said corresponding ends of the sectional arms and legs being relatively flat, and feet formed on the lower ends of the free portions of said legs being enlarged with respect to said body and flattened whereby to support the latter in ,7 a vertical position.
