PATENT @Erica FENTON E. STILVELL, OF MONTOUR FALLS, NEV YORK.
sTERlrLlzER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,936, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed October 2,1903.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FEN'roN E. STILWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Monteur Falls, in the county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sterilizers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in sterilizers, the objectbeing to provide an apparatus designed more particularly for use in barber-shops or in similar places where tools or instruments are constantly in use and it is desirable or necessary that they should be thoroughly sterilized at frequent intervals.
WV ith the foregoing objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a View in perspective of my improved sterilizer with the cover raised. Fig. 2 is a plan View with the cover and rack removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective with the cover closed and showing articles held therein for sterilization.
Areprcsents the receptacle, and B the cover, hinged or otherwise secured thereto, and C is an auxiliary chamber at one end preferably and in communication with the main receptacle and adapted to contain razors or other instruments for sterilization, it being' provided with a cover 1, hinged or otherwise secured thereto, whereby it may be closed, and the holes 2 2 are adapted to admit steam from the main receptacle thereinto. A coil of pipes?) conducts steam or hot water into the bottom of the main receptacle, and a rack 4, of reticulated material, is removably placed on corner-rests 6 6 above the coils and adapted to afford a support for towels or similar articles, the hot water and steam circulating freely through the meshes of the rack. The cover B is provided'with openings 7 and 8, adapted to receive the bristles of hair and shaving brushes, respectively, it being the purpose of this construction to merely admit the bristles to the interior of the receptacle, where they Serial No. 175,503. (No model.)
are exposed to the steam, and to keep the backs and handles outside, where they are not exposed to the action of the steam, and to facilitate this arrangement and the adjustment of the holes to various sizes of brushes the slides 9 and 1() are arranged to be slid in and out of the guides 12 12, the inner edges of these slides being constructed to conform to the shape of the brush to be held. On their outer ends handles 13 13 are formed, by means of which they are manipulated. To place a brush in position, the slide is pulled out and the bristles inserted through the hole in the cover, the slide being then pushed in and the brush being held securely around the bristles adjacent to the back or handle, the slide maintaining'its adjustment in the guides by the frictional contact therewith. A similar arrangement might be provided for the razorhandles, if desired. A peteock 14 is provided atsome convenient point in the coil at or near the center as possible for the purpose of discharging air from the pipe or coils. Cocks 15 and 16 are provided for draining the liquid contents from the main and auxiliary receptacles. Handles 17 and 18 are provided on the covers whereby to raise and' lower the covers.
In operation the sterilizer may be stationed in any convenient place and coupled up to any hot-water or steam system, or it may be supplied from some special form of heaterA as, for instan'ce, I propose to couple it to a heater of my own invention, although this is not at all necessary. Water is placed in the main receptacle, and some antiseptic solution may be placed in the auxiliary reservoir. The covers are then closed after having placed the towels or other articles which are intended to go inside in place. Then if there are brushes to be sterilized they are fastened in the cover, as previously explained; otherwise the slides are closed over the holes or openings in the cover, whereby to prevent the escape of steam.
Means (not shown) may be provided for cutheat therefor, the receptacle having openings to receive the bristles of brushes, guides adjacent to these openings, and adjustable slides in said guides adapted to clamp the brushes between their inner edges and the opposite ends of the openings.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speeiiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FEN'ION E. STILVELL.
