UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON H. EVANS, OF JOPLIN, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION STERILIZER AND IRRIGATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON H. EvANs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Sterilizer and Irrigator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combination sterilizers and irrigators, and especially to a certain novel construction, hereinafter fully described, by means of which I provide an extremely simple, compact and portable article of this class.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in use as a sterilizer; Fig. 2 is a similar view, with cover removed and tube attached, in use as an irrigator; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover portion reversed for use as a pan; and Fig. 4 is a like view of a perforated tray adapted to fit inside the sterilizer.
Referring to the drawing, the letter B designates the main receptacle, preferably constructed of material to resist rust, heat and chemicals, having an opening a in one end and a tap "a in the opposite or base end I) (Fig. 2). The opening a is designed to admit the sterilizer tray, hereinafter described, and at the same time to permit the main receptacle B to hold water to be converted into steam in the sterilizing process. The tap at permits the escape of steam, and when the instrument is used as an irrigator, accommodates a tube as illustrated in Fig. 2.
A cover portion A fits over the sterilizer, as shown in Fig. 1, said cover being adapted for use as a pan when reversed (Fig. 3). The pan A has attached thereto at either end handles C, preferably hinged as illustrated with strips of metal m and rivets 0.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 30, 1908.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Serial No. 430,189.
X'represents a perforated sterilizing tray for the instruments, dressings, towels, etc., adapted to fit into the receptacle B through the opening a as above indicated. The tray X is fitted with handles 0 and knobs or legs L.
An additional feature of novelty of my invention consists in the movable handles O preferably hinged to both ends of the main receptacle B. In the drawing this is accomplished by means of strips of metal m and rivets 0. The handles C are turned down and used as legs (Fig. 1) for sterilizing, and the handle at the upper end may be used to hang the instrument up for irrigating, or in the latter case, when placed upon a support, the lower handle may serve as a supplemental base (Fig. 2).
It is understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details illustrated, but may vary my construction within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A surgical appliance comprising a main receptacle having a diagonal opening at one end and a tap at the other, movable handles at both ends, said handles being adapted for use as legs, a supplemental tray adapted to fit inside the main receptacle, and a cover for closing said diagonal opening.
2. A surgical appliance comprising a main receptacle provided with an opening at one end and a tap at the other, movable handles at both ends, said handles being adapted for use as legs, a supplemental tray adapted to fit inside the main receptacle, and means for closing said opening.
