UNITED STATES Patented October 27, 1903.
JOHN c. KONRAD, oFNEw YORK, N. Y.
CARRIAGE-DOOR HANDLE.
SPECIFTGATION forming part of Letters Patent l \lo. 742,4 4 8, dated October 2'7, 1903.
Applieation filed August 12 1903. Serial No. 169,164. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN G. KONRAD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, New York city, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Door Handles, of which the follow-- ing is a specification. v
This invention relates to the door-handles of carriages, and especially those of the Brougham type andother styles Where the wheels are liable to throw mud from the roadway upon the door-handles and where the passenger is consequently liable to get his hand or glove soiled in manipulating the handle.
It also relates to those carriage-door handles which are so exposed as to become wet when it rains or snows and which are consequently unpleasant to manipulate.
The present invention consists in a novel construction of such handles whereby with-' out changing their location or materially affecting their appearance they are adapted to be manipulated when wet or soiled without wetting or soiling the hand or glove of the passenger.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings are perspective views of the improved handle, show ing it, respectively, in normal condition and as extended by means of its improved construction. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line A B, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the lineO D, Fig. 3.
Like reference letters and numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The shank a of the improved handle may be of any known or improved construction.
The handle being preferably T-shaped, as shown, its head or grip b is of an ordinary crossbar shape, round in cross-section, but is rendered hollow by an axial recess 0, extending from one end nearly to the other and prefer-. ably cylindrical, and its ends 1 and 2 are respectively fixed and movable. Said movable end includes an annular screw-cap d and a central knob e, the latter being the extremity of a lever-piece or extension-bar 3, movable endwise within said recess and preferably constructed with a circumferential shoulder f near its inner end. Between this shoulder f and said screw-cap d a spiral spring 4: surrounds the bar and tends to render it normally retracted, as in Figs.'l and 3.
When there is occasion to turn the handle in wet or muddy weather, the knob e, at the extremity of the extension-bar 3, can be grasped between finger and thumb'and the bar extended, as in Fig. 2,' when thebar may be freely grasped and the handle may be turned with increased leverage with a perfectly clean surface in contact with the hand. As soon as the knob e is released the extension-bar 3 is withdrawn into the hollow head or grip b by the retracting-spring l.
The exterior of the head or grip b of the handle may be decorated or finished in any approved style. Its ends 1 and 2 may be substantially alike in appearance, as represented,
or may may be diiferent, as preferred, and of any preferred design, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invent-ion and desire to patent ,under this specification- 1. A carriage-door handle provided with an "extension-bar normally inclosed therein to protect the same from wet and mud,and adapted to be extended at will for use in manipulating the handle.
2. A carriage-door handle having a hollow cross-bar head or grip provided internally with an endwise-movable extension-bar, and means whereby said bar is rendered normally retracted.
3. A T-shaped carriage-door handle having a cross-bar head round in cross-section provided with an axial recess, a shouldered extension-bar movable longitudinally within said recess, an. annular cap at one end of said recess, and a retracting-spring surrounding said bar between its shoulder and saidcap, within said recess, substantially as hereinbefore specified, for the purposes set forth.
JOHN C. KONRAD.
