BRUSH- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 634,546, dated October 10, 1899.

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansingburg, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts herein after described and subsequently claimed.

Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of my improved brush. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the slide-tube detached. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the pocketsleeve detached. Fig. 6 isan end view of the same. Fig. 7 is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, of a brush embodying my invention in slightly-modified form.

1 is thebrist-le-tu ft, which is inserted in the tubular support 2 and secured therein by; means of cement-in the usual well-known man'- ner. The conical plug 3, having the annularflange 4 and stem 5, is driven into the buttend of the tuft in the usual well-known manner and so that the annular flange will be inclosed by and fit the inner endof the tubular support. The slide-tube 6, provided on its outer end with the exterior flange 7 and on its inner end with the interior flange 8, is then slipped on over the inner end of the support, as seen in Fig. 2, and the pocket-sleeve 9 is slipped on over the slide-tube, as seen in the same Fig. 2. The inner end of the pocket sleeve is provided with a small aperture 10, adapted to receive and fit the stem 5. After the sleeve has been thus placed the handle 12, having a central socket adapted to receive the stem 5, is glued onto the stem in the position shown, thereby securely holding the sleeve in place. The outer end ofthe tubuapproximately its entire length and no farther. Its extended position is indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. I am thus able to provide a keeper for the bristle-tuft that out along the tuft to the position indicated by the dotted lines, where it will serve to prevent the tuftof bristles from being broken down or the individual bristles from diverging to such an extent as to impair the usefulness of the brush, as frequently happens when the knot or tuft is unprotected. Sliding the tube out along the tuft will serve to straighten out any individual bristles which may have been accidentally bent over or away from thehody of the tuft.

The pocket-sleeve serves as an ornamental part of the'han'dle and to wholly conceal the slide-tube while thebrush is in use or the tube withdrawn from the tuft of bristles.

In Fig. 7 1 have shown a modified construction wherein the slidetube 14 is provided with exterior annular flanges 15 on its opposite ends and the pocket-sleeve 16 with an introverted flange 17 on its outer end located 'intermediately of the tube-flanges 15 and forming a stop for limiting both the inward and outward movement of the slide-tube. this construction the slide-tube can be made support can be dispensed-with.
