Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed December 22, 1908. Serial No. 468,795.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jonas J. Biron, citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Self-Cleaning Combs, of which t e following is a s ecification.
The present invention re ates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to a novel attachment which is designed to be applied to the comb for removing accumulations of dirt from between the teeth thereof, thereby permitting of the comb being readily maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
The invention further contemplates an attaohment of this character which is inexpensive in its construction, which can be permanently applied to the comb and will not in any manner interfere with the use thereof, and which can be readily manipulated at any time to remove the accumulations of dirt from between the teeth of the comb.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for efil'ecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Corresponding and lihc parts are rcl'crrcd to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to thedrawing, the numeral 1 designates a comb which may be formed of any suitable material and is provided along one of its longitudinal cdgcs with the usual teeth 1*. Opposite ends of the comb are formed with the transverse slots 2 and the walls between adjacent teeth at the base thereof are inclined from one side of the comb to the opposite side as indicated at 3.
Slidably mounted upon one side of the comb is a plate 4 and pro ecting from this plate is a series of cleaning fingers 5 the extremities of which are deflected inwardly at 5 so as to be received between the teeth 1 B of the comb. The ends of the plate 4 are bent around opposite ends of the comb at 4 so as to guide the plate as it is moved laterally upon the com It will also be observed that the end )ortions 0f the plate are provided with proections 6 which operate within the respective slots 2 and engage opposite ends of the slots to limit the sliding movement of the plate. The intermediate portion of the plate is provided with a finger piece 7 which projects toward the back of the comb and is curved outwardly to permit of a firm grip'being readily obtained thereon. The portions of the plate 4 upon opposite sides of this fincr picco are provided with slits which extend inwardly from the rear edge thereof and "orm the spring tongues 8. These spring tongues frictionally engage the comb to hold the plate against rattling and when the plate is moved upwardly so as to hold the fingers in an inoperative position, these spring tongues engage a depression 9 in the side of the comb and hold the plate against movement. hen it is desired to clean the comb, it is merely necessary to grasp the fingcr piece 7 and move the plate downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, the cleaning fingers 5 being thereby caused to travel outwardly between the teeth 1 so as to rcmovo any accumulations of dirt therefrom. After the comb has been cleaned the plate 4 is moved backwardly into the position shown m Fig. 1 with the spring tongues S in cngagcmcnt with the depression 9 and the inwardly dcllcctcd ends 5 of tho 'lingcrs 5 titling against the inclined walls 3 at tho basc ol' the tooth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as now is:
l A device as specified comprising a comb having an inclincdwall formed atoncsidc adjacent the upper edge of the same and laterally formed slots disposed in said side, a plate positioned against said side of said comb, curved ends formed on said plate for engagement about the opposite ends of said comb to retain he plate in position, projections l'ormcd on7snid ilate for engagementinthe transverse slots ormcd on said comb, tongues the upper edge of said plate for cngagemc t against the inclined face formed disposed i;
g ezenee transverse slots to limit the movement of said plate, beveled edges formed on said comb between the teeth thereof and fingers 15a depended from said late and adapted to engage against said inc thereon and a plurality of fingers depended from said plate for engagement between the teeth of said comb.
2. A device'as specified comprising a comb having transverse slots formed in the opposite ends of the same in one side thereof, an inclined face formed in said side of said comb adi'acent the upper edge thereof, a plate slidab y disposed against said side of said comb, tongues carried by said plate for frictional engagement against said comb, projections carried by said plate for engagement in said lned faces. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
