Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STUART C. S'rnour, a citizen of the United States, residing at Speedwell, in the county of Vythe and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to toilet articles, and has special reference to a comb and a novel backingor handle whereon said comb is mounted.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a novel form of device of this character wherein the comb may be readily removed from the back for cleansing purposes.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel construct-ions, arrangements and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved comb showing a brush in connection with the comb backing. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
This device consists of a back 10 having extending along one edge a flange 11 adjacent to which there is provided a longitudinally arranged groove 12. This back 10 is also provided with a plurality of dovetail grooves 13 wherein slide the dovetails 14 of a brush having a backing 15 whereon are mounted the bristles 16. This backing 15 is held from sliding away from the back 10 by means of a pivoted keeper 17 of any desired construction. One edge of the backing l5 is cut away as at 18 .to provide a rabbet.
The comb consists of a back 19 arranged to t the slot 12 and this back is also provided with a longitudinally extending groove 20 for the reception of the reduced edge of the backing 15 formed by the cut away portion 1S, this construction being clear from an inspection of Fig. 2. rlhe comb back 19 is thickened as at 21 so as to lill the wider part of the groove 12 and from this thickened portion spring the teeth 22 which are arranged to project somewhat below the bristles 16.
In using the device by changing the angle at which it is held in contact with the head either the comb teeth 22 may engage the hair or the bristles 16 may be used.
When it is desired to clean the brush it is simply necessary to revolve the keeper 17, slipping the backing 15 slightly out and removing the comb. The comb may then be cleaned as a single article or the brush backing may be slid entirely clear of the back 10, and both parts thoroughly cleaned.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the kind described, a back having a flange extending along one edge and provided with a groove extending longitudinally adjacent said flange, a backing mounted upon the back to slide laterally thereof and provided with a rabbet forming a reduced edge adjacent the flange of the invention,
back, a comb provided with a back adapted to fit in the groove of the first mentioned `back and having a longitudinal groove adapted to receive the reduced edge of the backing, said comb back having teeth springing therefrom, and a keeper to prevent the backing moving laterally with reference to the first mentioned back.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STUART C. STROUP.
