Description

- H. KAHAN COMB CLEANER Filed April 4, 1940 Patented June 10, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT `OFFICE CODB CLEANER: Harry Kahan, Auburn, N. Y.
Application April 4, 1940, Serial No. 327,894 s Claims. (o1. 13a-cs) This invention relates to a novel construction of cleaner for combs and aims particularly to provide a cleaner adapted to be carried by a comb and having improved means for eiectively cleaning the deposit from the adjacent sides of comb teeth and mean-s for limiting the movement of the cleaner relatively to the comb to prevent its being detached therefrom.
Still anotherv aim of the invention is to provide a comb cleaner having cleaning elements to clean the comb teeth and so constructed that the scrapings from the teeth will be directed laterally, outwardly of the lteeth as theA cleaner is moved towards the free ends of the teeth to thereby reduce the danger of the teeth being broken during the cleaning operation and to eliminate the need for pushing the scrapings toward .and beyond the free ends of the teeth.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a comb provided with the cleaner,
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially along the plane of the line 2 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the cleaner in an extended position, dispose-d adjacent the free ends of the teeth of the comb,
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken substantially along the plane of the line 4 4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken substantially along the plane of the line 5--5 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designa/te like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I D designates generally a comb having a head portion II, enlarged end teeth I2, and smaller intermediate teeth I3, which may be of one or more sizes.
The member I4 includes a bar I5 provided with a row of slots I6, disposed transversely to the bar I5, and sized to slidably engage the teeth I3 for slidably mounting the cleaning member I4, on the comb Ill. As best seen in Figure 2,'the upper edge of the bar I5 is channeled to receive the lower portion of the head I'I when the cleaning element I4 is in a fully retracted position. Between the slots IIS. bar I5 is provided with cleaning elements or blades I8, which extend between the teeth I3, toward their free end, and which are provided with tapered free ends 2 I, formed by the rounded portions 22. A
ly Vfrom the sides of the end teeth I2 to form stop elements for co-acting with extensions 24 on the end s of the bar I5 which slidably engage the side and end teeth I2 and which are adapted to contact the heads of the pins 23 to limit the movement of theicleaning member I4 outwardly or toward the free ends of teeth I2 and I3.
From the foregoing it will be seen, that when the cleaning member I4 is in a retracted position, as seen in Figures 1 and 2, the comb I0 may be employed in the conventional manner for combin-g the hair. To clean the teeth I2 and I3, the -cleaning member I4 is moved from the position, as seen in Figure 2, to the position, as seen in Figure 3 and in dotted lines in Figure 1. As the cleaning memberA I4 moves toward the free ends of 'the teeth I2 and I3 the deposit from the sides of the teeth will be removed by the cleaning element or blades I8, and the scrapings, not shown, will be directed l-aterally, outwardly from .-the sides of the teeth by the round surfaces 2'2 to thereby prevent the scrapings from being directed toward the free ends of the teeth and possibly forming obstructions to break off the teeth, Extensions `24 will engage the stop pins 23 when the cleaning member I4 reaches the position, as seen in dotted lines in Figure 1 and Figure 3, to prevent the cleaning elements I8 from passing beyond the teeth of the comb Ill, and to prevent the cleaning member I4 from being detracted from the comb.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to as only a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustra ted and described.
I claim as my invention:
1. A comb cleaner, comprising in combination with a comb having end teeth and relatively narrow intermediate teeth, a bar slidably engaging the intermediate teeth, said bar having portions disposed between said teeth and extending toward their free ends, said portions being tapered in a direction toward the free ends of the teeth and providing means f-cr scraping adjacent sides of the teeth and to force the scrapings from the teeth outwardly of the outer edges of the teeth, and means associated with said bar and with Ihe end .teeth for limiting the movement of the 2. A comb cleaner comprising in 4combination with a toothed comb having enlarged end teeth, a bar slidably mounted on teeth of the comb and having portions disposed between the teeth and projecting from the bar toward the free end-s of the teeth, said bar having extensions on its ends, slidably engaging said end teeth, and means on said end teeth for engaging said extensions for limiting the movement of the bar.
3. A comb cleaner, comprising in combination with a comb having a head portion, enlarged end teeth and intermediate relatively narrow teeth, said end teeth being provided with stop means adjacent their free end-s; a bar slidably mounted on the intermediate teeth vand. having a channel for receiving the head portion, elongated fiat scraping members on said bar disposed between the teeth and extending from the bar toward the free ends of the teeth, said ba'r having extensions at its ends for slidably engaging said end teeth and for contacting said stop means to limit the movement of the bar outwardly of the teeth.
4. A comb cleaner, comprising a slotted bar for slidably engaging teeth of a comb, said bar having straight substantially hat blade portions extending between the teeth of the comb, toward their free ends, and said blade portions having tapered free ends for directing the scrapings from the teeth outwardly, laterally of the comb, when said bar is moved toward the free ends of the teeth.
5. A comb cleaner as in claim 4, comprising extensions on the ends of said bar for slidably engaging the end teeth of the comb, and stop elements carried by said end teeth, adjacent their free ends, for engaging said extension to limit the movement of the bar toward the free ends of the comb teeth to permit the blade portions to be moved to the free ends of the teeth and to retain the bar in engagement with the teeth.
6. A comb cleaner comprising a bar having spaced transverse slots for slidably engaging the teeth of a comb, and elongated, flat blades project'ing from the underside of the portions of the bar, disposed between the said slots, and disposed between the teeth of the comb and extending toward the free ends thereof.
'7. A comb `cleaner as in claim 6, said blades being tapered along their opposite edges and adjacent their free ends to form points at the free ends of the blades.
8. A comb cleaner, comprising a slotted bar for slidably engaging teeth of a comb, said bar having straight substantially fiat blade portions extending between the teeth of the comb, toward their free ends, `said blade portions having tapered free ends for directing the scrapings from the teeth outwardly, laterally of the comb, when said bar is moved toward the free ends of the teeth, said scraping members being of substantially the same shape and size as the free end portions of the intermediate teeth.
