CHARLES LEWIS PULLMAN, OF PEQUANAO, NEW JERSEY.
"CIGAR-HOLDER OR PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,265, dated November 26,1901.
Application filed July 19, 1900. Renewed March 27, 1901. Serial No. 53,091. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LEWIS PULL- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pequanac,in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Holders or Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains tomake and use the same.
The object is to obviate in a simple, efficient, and thoroughly practical manner the strain on the teeth of smokers resulting from the weight of the cigar-holder with the added weight of the cigar and of a pipe, the means employed for accomplishing this end being inexpensive in character and occasioning no objectionable expense in the production either of the cigar-holder or of the pipe.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of the improvement in cigar-holders or pipes hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View exhibiting the cigar-holder in the mouth of the user, the face of the user being indicated. Fig. 2 is a similar view exhibiting my invent-ion as applied to a pipe. Fig. 3 is aview in perspective, displaying the cigarholder per .96. Fig. at is a sectional view of a modified form of holder.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a smoking utensil, which may be either a cigar-holder, as shown in Fig. 1, or a pipe, as shown in Fig. 2. The cigar-holder and the pipe may be made of any suitable material and ornamented in any manner.
The present invention resides in means whereby strain and resulting discomfort to a user will be obviated.
The improvement consists in providing the holder or the pipe with legs a, (clearly shown in Fig. 3,) which are adapted,as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein in Fig. 1 theimprovement is shown as applied to a cigar-holder,
and in Fig. 2to a pipe, to rest against the chin of the user, acting as a fulcrum to support the weight of the utensil. The legs a, which constitute the rests, are by preference made integral with the holder or with the pipe-stem and, as shown in Fig. 3, are hollow for the purpose of lightness. It is to be understood, however, that the legs may have a pivotal connection with the cigarholder or with the pipe-stem to permit of adjustment in the arc of a circle, thus to permit the cigar or the pipe being held at the desired angle in use.
While I have shown and described the supporting means for the cigar-holder or pipe as consisting of a plurality of projections or legs, I do not wish to be limited to that construction, as the support may obviously consist of a plate suitably formed and positioned upon the stem or any other form of projection or projections suitable for my purposes and still fall strictly within the scope of my invention.
It is to be understood that in practice the device of my invention may be applied to any style of cigar-holder or pipe, whether made of wood, meerschaum, clay, or the like, and that, if desired, it may be made detachable from the utensil without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a smoking utensil having a stem and provided with a suitable mouthpiece, a support upon said stem in proximity to the mouthpiece and extending so as to bear against the face of the user when the utensil is in use and to form a prop for a portion of the utensil when not in use, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES LEWIS PULLMAN.
