snomne-rrrn.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUs'r SOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to pipes for use in smoking tobacco, and has for an object to provide a simple pipe so arranged and constructed that it will prevent the tobacco from clogging the stem of the pipe and afford a cool and pleasant smoke to the user.
The invention comprehends, among other features, the provision of a pipe body having the usual bowl and which is preferably provided with a member arranged to prevent particles of tobacco from entering and clogging the stem of the pipe, thus keeping the stem of the pipe clean, while at the 'same time the smoke from the burning tobacco will not be prevented from entering the stem and will, when it reaches the mouth of the smoker, be cooled so as to prevent the smoke from burning or biting the tongue or tissues of the mouth.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this speci fica-tion, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the pipe; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken onthe line 2'2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mem her which is adapted to be arrangedin the bowl of the pipe.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a bowl 10 formed with a suitable stem 11 having a longitudinal passage 12 communicating with the bottom of the bowl 10,- this construction being similar to the construction of the ordinary pipes now generally in use. Formed in the bowl 10 is a circular seat 13, said seat being preferably formed at the inner end of the bowl and.

the passage with the interior of the bowl. A hood like member 14 in the nature of a filterinmember is provided for disposition in the owl 10 and adapted to repose uppn the seat 13, said member being prefera ly formed of a single piece of material prot vidin. a top 15 having a medial upwardly struc non-perforated bulged portion or bead 16, with the said top provided with a series of apertures 17 and including an annular depending non-perforated circular flange 18 which reposes upon the seat 13.
Before the hood member described can be used in connection with the usual pipes now generally used, I preferably form the seat 13 in the pipe, as shown, in order to properly accommodate the member in the'bowl and when the member is used in the bowl as Shown and mentioned, it will be apparent that tobacco packed into the bowl on top of the member, upon beingignited, will be prevented from entering the passage 12 of through the stem to the mouth of the user but particles of tobacco contained in the bowl will be prevented from entering and clogging the stem when the operator draws upon the stem to suck the smoke generated in the bowl into his mouth.
The member 14: can preferably be made of stamped metal such as aluminum or the hke, and it will be apparent that a large number of these devices can be cheaply man' 5 ufactured and can be used in vconnection with the partlcular pipe shown herein or, if desirable, can also be used on the ordinary pipes now generally seen upon the market.
Having thus described my invention, ll claim:
In combination with the bowl of a pipe having a seat formed therein and a tubular nular inverted dish-like apertured hood member disposed in the bowl to repose upon the seat, said dish-like member being proedge andsaid bead, said bead projecting upvided with an annular depending non-per-r Wardly in the bowl.
forated flange, the lower edge of the flange In testimony whereof I afllx my signature of the hood member engaging-Said seat, and in presence of two Witnesses.
a' medial upwardly struck non-perforated AUGUST W. PETERSOHN. bead formed on the top face of the hood Witnesses: member, With the apertures in the member PETER. J. HEINZ, formed in such face between its marginal WILLIAM LANGE.
