Description
J. W. FLEISCHMANN.
PIPE-STEM.
Patented Nov.2,1875.
fiZJUME m WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS W. FLEISOHMANN, OF WILLIAMSBURG,'NEWYORK.
l IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-STEMS.
Specification forming part of Letters'Patnt No. 169,349, dated November 2, 1875; application filed April 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs W. FLEISOH- MANN, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to pipestem, but may be adapted to wood or other pipes; and the nature of my invention consists in a receptacle of glass or other suitable material attached to the mouth-piece of the pipe stem or pipe, and protected by means of an exterior shell, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my pipe-stem, and Fig. 2 is another section of the same as attached to a pipe.
A represents the mouth-piece of a pipe-stem provided with the usual smoke-passage a. At the lower end of the piece A is attached a glass receptacle, B, made of glass, rubber, metal, or other suitable material. This receptacle may be attached to the mouth-piece by means of rubber packing, cork, screw-threads, or other convenient means, and in the side of the receptacle near the upper end are made one or more holes, or, for the passage of the smoke to the mouthpiece. The receptacle B is surrounded andprotected by an exterior shell, (3, which forms a part of the pipe-stem. At the same time the smokepasses from the lower part of the stem through the receptacle to the mouth.
This invention may be adapted to wood or other pipes by attaching it to the mouth-piece and fitting it into the shank of the pipe, as shown at D, the shank thus forming the exterior shell protecting the receptacle.
The receptacle B collects the nicotine and prevents the same from being drawn up into the mouth of the smoker and from entering the bowl of the pipe, dampening the tobacco, and can easily be emptied when necessary.
The advantage of this device over all others is that the various parts are made separate and all detachable; therefore any one or more of the parts can be replaced when broken, or
cleaned when necessary.
Having thus fully described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The stem A and shell 0 attached by screwthread, in combination with the detachable glass receptacle B having perforation t, all as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS W. FLEISOHMANN.
