To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED A. JEWELL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at WVorthington, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pipe wherein all moisture, saliva, or other foreign matter in the stem will be collected within a removable receptacle therein. and thus prevented from reaching the bowl andjvherein. in like manner, any nicotin coming from the bowl will be prevented from reaching the mouth of the user.
A further object of this invention is to prmide a pipe fwhich may be easily kept in a sanitary condition through the ready re moval of the nicotin and moisture therefrom.
The invention also has as a further object to provide a pipe, the parts of which will not become clogged through usage and whichmay be readily assembled and disassembled to effect the removal of the receptacle containing the nicotin or other foreign matter. And a stilh further object of the invention is to generally improve and increase the efficiency of devicesv of the above described character.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

immaterial, since my invention is equally applicable to pipes of various designs. The outer extremity of the stem 11 is counterbored to receive a preferably cylindrical jacket 13 which fits closely therein. The jacket 13 is closed at its inner end as shown at 14, save for a centrally disposed aperture therein formed by a tube 15 which extends therethrough and'is supported upon the end portion 14: centrally within the jacket 13. The outer extremity of the tube 15 terminates short of the outer end of the jacket 13 and is flared laterally to' extend upwardly,
as shown at'16,'when in operative position within the pipe. This tube 16 communicates at its inner end with a passage 17 formed in the pipe stem and leading to the bottom of the bowl. The mouthpiece 12 is formed at one extremity with a threaded stud 19 defining an annular shoulder 20 at the inner extremity thereof. Seating against this shoulder is an annular andinwardly extending flange 21 formed at one end of a cap 22 which is designed to fit over the stud. An interiorly threaded nut 23 is adapted to fit within the cap and is received by the threaded stud 19 upon which it is screwed down to clamp the flange 21 intermediate the shoulderQO and said nut, thereby firmly securing the cap to the extremity of the mouthpiece. The outer extremity of the cap is interiorly threaded as at 24 to receive the threaded extremity 25 of the stem 11, thus joining the mouthpiece to the stem. It will thus be observed that the jacket 13 with its centrally disposed tube 15 forms a nlcotm cup intermediate the bowl of the pipe and the stem thereof and, that smoke drawn through the duct 17 formed in the stem and the duct 18 in the mouthpiece must pass through the tube 15. The laterally deflected and upwardly turned extremity 16 of the tube serves to effectually prevent any moisture coming from the mouthpiece from finding its way into the bowl of the pipe but such moisture will be caught and retained by the cylindrical jacket 13 pend ng 1ts removed. in like manner, any nicotin coming throu h the passage 17 formed in the stem will Tow through the tube 15 and be deposited within the nicotin cup and thus prevented from reaching the mouth of the user of the pipe. n
in Figs. 3 and 4, T have illustrated a modified form of my invention-and as used 1n connection with a pipe having a curved stem. In this form of the invention the nicotin cup 26 is formed with a straight inwardly disposed tube 27. Owing to the inclination of the stem, the nicotin cup will be held upwardly, thus preventing moisture or other foreign matter from entering the tube 27, In this modified form, the mouthpiece 28 of the pipe is connected to the stem 29 by a cap 30 in the same manner as above described with reference .to, thepreferred form of the invention. the cap being heldby a nut 31, only, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings; in a cheaper grade of pipe, it may be found expedient to join the mouthpiece and stem simply through frictional engagement of the extremity 32 of the cap 30 with the outer extremity 33 of the stem.
While I have illustrated the nicotin cup as being cylindrical in shape, still it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to this particular form of cup as the cup will be found equally as eflective in use if made square or any other preferred shape.
In Fig. 5,71 have illustrated a further modification of my invention, wherein the stem 34 leading from the bowl 35 of the pipe is provided with a central bore communicating at its inner extremity with a duct 36 opening into the pipe bowl, said bore being interiorly threaded adjacent its outer extremity, as at 37, to receive the exteriorly threaded stud 38 formed on one end of the mouth piece 39. A pipe having a stem recessed to receive a nicotin cup, a nicotin cup arranged 'withinsaid recess, said cup including a-cylindriealljacket openat one end and closed at the other, a tube supported medially within the jacket by the closed end thereof, the said'tube opening, at one extremity, through the closed end of the jacket and t rminating at its opposite extremity adjacent the open end thereof, the said last mentioned extremity of the tube being laterally flared to extend toward one side of the jacket and being arranged to project upwardly in the operative position of the nicotin cup within the stem, and a mouthpiece carried by the stem.
4. The combination with a pipe having a stem disposed to receive a nicotin cup, of a nicotin cup positioned within the stem and including a tube providing a duct and having one extremity thereof turned laterally, a mouth-piece, and means connecting the mouth-piece with the stem, said means being disposed to operatively engage the nicotin cup to normally maintain the laterally turned extremity of the tube in vertical position within the stem.
