Description
June 3, 1952 B. 2. SMITH COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND ASH TRAY Filed Aug. 2, 15:46
Patented June 3; 1 952 OFFICE COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND ASH TRAY Birt Z. Smith, Klamath Falls, Greg. 7 U Application August 2, 1946, -Serial No. 687,931 I 1 Claim. (01. 131-175) 'This' invention relates to a combination cigarette holder and ash tray and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind wherein the holder and tray are separable but provide efiective means, when in assembly, to receive ashes and sparks which may fall from a cigarette during the smoking operation.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind wherein the tray includes amember for slidable engagement with the tray proper and which is adapted to be held by the holder, said member being entirely separable from the tray so that said member, when removed, may be employed as a means for supporting a lighted cigarette in a safe position when not being smoked.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved combination cigarette holder and ash tray whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: I
In the embodiment of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, the holder I-I comprises an elongated tubular and substantially cylindrical member of desired dimensions and which is formed at one end portion to provide a bit I for placement in the usual manner in the mouth of a smoker. v
The tray T, as herein embodied, is shallow and rectangular in form and of a length substantially equal to that of the holder H. The side walls 2 of the tray are continued by the inwardly disposed flanges 3 substantially at right angles thereto, each of said flanges being of a length coextensive in length to the tray T.
The end wall 4 of the tray atone end thereof terminates a distance below the upper longitudinal margins of the side walls 3 to allow for the insertion of a slide plate 5 of a length substantially equal to the length of the tray T. The side longitudinal marginal portions of this plate 5 are received within the grooves 6 provided in the depending lips I disposed along the free longitudinal marginal portions of the flanges 3.
The space between the flanges 3 is of a width preferably infexcess of the diameter of a cigarette falling from a cigarette while the same is being smoked will be collected within the tray T.
The holder H extends longitiudinally of, and is preferably rigidly attached to, the plate 5, along the longitudinal center thereof and the plate 5 at opposite sides of the holder H, and closely adjacent to the extremities thereof, is provided with the upstanding lugs 8 which are adapted to be engaged, when the slide plate 5 is in either its fully closed or fully opened position, between the spring jaws 9 carried by the forward end portions of the flanges 3. Even though two spring jaws are shown, only one spring jaw and the lugs on one side of the holder are required to secure the plate in the selected position.
It is to be particularly pointed out that when the device is in use, the cigarette C held by the holder H is sufficiently spaced above the tray T to assure free circulation of air around the cigarette.
The outer extremity of the slide plate 5, or base as it may be called, has disposed thereacross a depending flange in substantially at right angles thereto. This flange, when the device is being used by a smoker, can be so engaged or contacted with the outside of the lower lip of the smoker as to assure proper maintenance of the device in the mouth of the user and in a manner lessening the firmness of the clamping of the mouth-piece or bit I of the holder between the lips or teeth to support the weight of the device.
As is clearly illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, this flange l0 coacts with the outer or free end portion of the bit or mouth-piece l to provide means whereby the cigarette may be supported upon a table top or other surface in a manner to prevent burning of said surface as the cigarette C can be effectively supported in an upwardly disposed position independently of any connection of the slide plate 5 to the'tra-y T.
Itis of advantage to have the bit or mouthpiece I heavier than the holder H proper so that, when the holder H with an applied cigarette C, is removed, from the tray T and placed upon a table top or other surface in the manner shown in Fig. 4, the weighted mouth-piece or bit I will be positioned with the cigarette C inclined upwardly.
It is to be further pointed out that with the use of the device as herein embodied and when the slide plate 5 is operatively engaged with the tray T, there will be eliminated the chance of the lighted end of a cigarette contacting the top of a table or other surface.
I claim:
A smoking device of the character described, comprising an elongate shallow tray having an opentop defined by spaced longitudinal guide flanges, an elongate slide plate adapted to be positioned in covering relation with the opening and in slidable contact with said flanges, a ciga rette tube secured upon the top of and extending longitudinally of the slide plate, the cigarette selected one of two positions with respect to the open top of the tray.
