Description

2&32536 March 3, 1936. N. G. HQRWHTT ET AL CIGARETTE REST Filed May 26, 1953 ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 3, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE CIGARETTE REST Application May 26, 1933, Serial No. 672,920
7 Claims.
This invention relates to a rest for supporting a cigarette, cigar, or other suitable object. The rest is so constructed that it can be set in various places such as on the edge of a dish. Almost any dish can be converted into an ash tray by setting one or more rests upon its edge. The device consists essentially of a trough shaped body portion mounted upon a spring clip or support in such a manner that said slip can be set at various angles with the body portion, a friction grip being'provided between the clip and said body portion to maintain the angle set.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent upon further study of the description and drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken along the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the rest shown in position on a dish with turned in edges, said dish being in section, and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the rest shown in position on a shallow dish, said dish being in section with a portion broken away.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the device with the clip omitted to show the slits.
The rest comprises a concaved body portion 6, preferably of sheet metal. In use, the cigarette rests upon said body portion. Body portion 6 is stamped and slit to form a pair of oppositely disposed lips I, located below its cigarette supporting surface. Body portion 6 is further provided with slits giving rise to tongues 9 extending substantially at right angles to lips I. Slits 8 are made long enough to provide suflicient resiliency to tongues 9 to enable them to act as flat springs. Inserted above lips I and below tongues 9 is a spring clip denoted in its entirety by the numeral Hi. When clip ill is thus inserted, tongues 9 normally exert spring pressure upon the arcuate head ll of clip Ill. The head of the clip subtends an angle greater than degrees. While a circular curvature is preferred, other forms of curvature may be used.
Said head is gripped frictionally between tongues 9 and lips I. The curved form of head I l permits clip ill to be rotated so that it can be set at various angles with body portion 6. Head ll slides between lips I and tongues 9 as the clip is rotated. Between head II and prongs I2 is a necked in portion l3 to assist in gripping a dish M, or the edge of another object upon which it is desired to set the rest. The necked in portion also serves as a stop to the rotation of the clip.
When the rest is used with a dish shaped as dish I4, Fig. 4, clip I0 is turned relatively to body portion 6 so as to enable the latter to be set in a horizontal position. When the rest is used. with a dish with an edge as dish I5, Fig. 5, the clip is turned at another angle.
While the claims specify the rest as used with a cigarette, we wish it to be understood that the rest is suitable for supporting a cigar or other object. Also that the rest need not necessarily be used on a dish but may be used on other objects with suitable edges.
We claim:-
1. A cigarette rest comprising a body portion for holding a cigarette, a clip for supporting the body portion, said clip having a head and a part for engaging the edge of a dish, a pair of oppositely disposed lips extending from said body portion and a pair of oppositely disposed resilient tongues on said body portion extending in a direction substantially at right angles to the direction of said extension of said lips, the head of the clip coming above the lips and below the tongues, said tongues applying spring pressure on said head, pressing the same down on the lips, the head of the clip being curved, causing the angle between the clip and the body portion to be changed when said head is slid between the pair of lips and the pair of tongues.
2. A cigarette rest comprising an elongated body portion formed to support a cigarette, a substantially U shaped clipformed of a strip of resilient material for supporting said body portion upon a dish by the straddling of the clip upon the edge of the dish, a pair of oppositely disposed lips extending from said body portion substantially at right angles to its longitudinal axis and a pair of spaced and oppositely disposed resilient tongues on said body portion extending in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said body portion, the head of the clip being curved and coming between the lips and tongues, said tongues applying spring pressure on said head, pressing the same down on the lips,
3. A cigarette rest comprising a body portion formed to support a cigarette, a clip having resilient prongs for supporting the body portion upon the edge of a dish, said clip having an arched head connecting said prongs, means upon said body slidably engaging said head, whereby said body may slide along the curvature of said head.
and an elongated resilient tongue slit from said body pressing down against said head.
4. A cigarette rest comprising a body portion formed to support a cigarette, a clip, for supporting the body portion, having a part for engaging the edge of a dish, said clip having an arched head, means upon said body slidably engaging said head, said head sliding through said means when the angle between the body portion and the clip is changed, and a pair of oppositely disposed elongated resilient tongues on said body portion pressing down upon said head.
5. A cigarette rest as claimed in claim 4 in which the longitudinal axes of said tongues is substantially parallel to the plane of the sliding.
6. A cigarette rest comprising a body portion formed to support a cigarette, a substantially U shaped clip for supporting the body portion upon a dish by straddling the edge of same, said clip having its head part curved into an arc extending, through an angle greater than 180 degrees,
said clip having a reversal of curvature at the base of the head part for each leg, each leg extending from said base in a general direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the clip, means upon said body portion slidably engaging said head part, and a pair of oppositely disposed elongated resilient tongues slit from said body portion pressing down upon said head.
7. A cigarette rest comprising a body portion formed to support a cigarette, a clip for supporting the body portion, having a part for engaging the edge of a dish, said clip having an arched head, means upon said body portion slidably en gaging said head, whereby said body portion may slide along the curvature of said head, and an elongated resilient tongue on said body portion pressing against said head, the longitudinal axis of said tongue being substantially parallel to the plane of said sliding.
