JAMES R. VAN HORN AND JOSEPH B. ROBERTS, OF NEWTOWN, PENN- SYLVANIA.
IMPROVED ROOFING COMPOSITION.
fiil1ttlgtillllt referrer: to in flgesi 21m 33mm ant making 112m at the time TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JAMES R. VAN HORN and JOSEPH B. ROBERTS, both of Newtown, in the county of Bucks, and State of Pennsylvania. have invented or discovered a new and useful Composition of Matter for Roofing and other like purposes, of which the following is a full and exact description. 1
We have discovered on the banks of the Neshamony, in Bucks county, Pennsylvania, arock, apparently of the secondary formation, and formed from the detritus of other rocks. It is neither a slate nor a shale, but has a conchoidal fracture and a granular structure. As far as We have been able to learn, the principal constituents of this rock are iron, clay, and steatite. We'call it for the sake of distinction orophomaton. We pulverize this material finely ina mill and mix it with coal tar or naphtha until the proper consistency is obtained. The composition is applied to the surface, to be covered with a brush or swab in the usual Wellknown way.
Owing to the quantity of steatite contained in this rock it can be very finely comminuted, and possesses a smooth, unotuous feeling. The iron increases its drying properties, and the clay gives firmness and body to the composition. We thus, by the use of this composition, secure a cheap, firm, smooth, and fire-proof covering for roofs.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The combination, with coal tar or naphtha, of the mineral above described, as a composition for roofing. In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
JAMES R. VAN HORN, v J. B. ROBERTS. Witnesses:
HENRY BALDWIN, Jr, WM. B. DAYTON.
