IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR SATURATING PAPER AND OTHER FABRICS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, ALONZO T. BOON and JOSEPH STAFFORD, of the city of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Composition for Saturating Paper or other Fahric; andwe do hereby declare that-the'following is a full, clear, and exact description-of the same.

Our invention is intended as an additional improvement to that patented by ALoNzo T. BOON, March 12,

1867-, assignor to himself and JOSEPH STAFFORD, which patent has reference to 'the combination of molasses,

sorghum, or other saccharine matter with coal tar and the silicate of alumina, or other material, for the purpose of producing a new and improved composition for roofing. This invention now consists in the application and use of saccharine matter combined with coal. tar and thesilicate of alumina or any suitable material for saturating felting, paper, or other fabric. i

We find that paper saturated with saccharine matter combined with the coal tar renders the same more elastic and flexible, and is not liable to dry stiff and brittle, like that saturated with coal tar alone, and consequently wilhadapt itself generally to the irregularities of any roof without cracking. We also find that by adding the silicate of alumina or, other powdered material of a like nature at the same time it will form a coating upon the surface of thepaper which will resist the action of the weather and be impervious to .water for a long time. Fabric maybe saturated in this way, and put on like shingles or slate, by any person, with or without the same having, to be reooated. The proportion of molasses used is from one quarter to one twentieth to the whole.

We design this composition generally for roofing. It may be used to'great advantage for car and deck: tops, for theiinner sheathing of the sides of buildings and vessels, or other like purposes.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The application and use of saccharine matter, employed substantially in the manner and'for the purpose as herein specified.
