CHECK FOR DOORS OR GATES.
SIPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,430, dated une 15, 1897'.
Application filed December 21, 1896. Serial No. 616,462. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RANsoM BEDELL VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barre, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Doors or Gates, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices for hinged doors, gates, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class for holding a door or gate in any desired position except in a locked or closed position.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, inwhich I have shown my improvement applied for the pur pose of holding a door, and in which- Figure 1 is a partial plan view of my improved door-holder, showing a part of a door in position or held thereby; Fig. 2, a side View of the holder; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the holder, showingthe application there of; and Fig. 4, a perspective View of a detail of the construction.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a holder for the' purpose herein specified, which consists of a device somewhat in the form of a tripod, said device being provided with a head 5, from which projects a backwardly and downwardly directed leg 6 and two forwardly and outwardly directed legs 7. Extending downwardly from the head 5 is a hanger 8, and formed in the side of said hanger and in said head isa vertical triangular groove 9, in which is mounted a vertical slide 10, at the bottom of which is a foot or projection 11.
The foot or projection 11 is provided at one Sis provided at its lower end with a backwardly-directed shoulder or projection 13, to which is pivoted a lever 14, the forward end of which passes through a slot in the hanger and is adapted to enter a transverse notch or recess 15 in the vertically-movable slide 10,
and secured to said lever between its pivotal connection and the outer end thereof is a contractile spring 17, which is also secured to the leg 6, and secured to the lower end of the vertically-movable slide 10 at 18 is a strong contractile spring 19, which is also secured to the leg 6.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In Figs. 1 and 3 I have shown at 20 a part of a door which is supposed to be hinged in the usual manner, and whenever it is desired to open the door and hold the same in an open position the holder is placed upon the floor, the slide 10 is "depressed, and the foot 11 is passed under the bottom of the door, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
r The slide 10 may be depressed by pressure applied to the foot 11 by means of the foot of the operator and also by the lever 14:, and the spring 19 when'the slide 10 is depressed serves to pull the same upwardly, and the lever LL operates to hold the slide in the depressed condition, and when the door is opened the foot 11 of the holder is passed sidewise thereunder, and the lever 14 and the springs 17 and 19 serve to hold the parts stationary, and the door will be securely held at the point desired.
The holder may be disconnected from the door by pulling it outwardly or by moving the free end of the lever 14 downwardly and then moving the holder away from the door.
It will be understood that my improved holder may be operated in connection with a gate, and it will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction here in described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully. described my invention, I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The herein-described device for holding doors and gates in an open position, the same consisting of a head, and three legs one of which projects backwardly and downwardly and the other two forwardly and downwardly, said head being provided with a hanger, in which is formed a groove which passes through the head, and a spring-operated slide mounted in said groove and provided at its lower end with a foot or projection, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described device for holding doors and gates in an open position, the same consisting of a head, and three legs, one of which projects backwardly and downwardly and the other two forwardly and downwardly, said head being provided with a hanger, in which is formed a groove which passes through the head, and a spring-operated slide mounted in said groove and provided at its lower end with a foot or projection, said slide being provided at its lower end with a spring which is secured thereto, and to one of said legs, and
which operates to draw the slide upwardly, and said hanger being provided with a pivoted spring-operated lever one end of which is designed to operate in a notch or recess formed in the slide, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of December, 1896.
RANSOM BEDELL VAUGHAN.
