To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. GLUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sliding-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements'in sliding doorsnsed on closed top vehicles, commonly called storm buggies; and the ob ject of my invention is to provide a locking device for sliding doors which shall securely lock the door when closed, or partly closed, or when opened to its farthest extent; also a device which, when applied, prevents the door from rattling.
The nature of my invention will be readily comprehended, reference being had to the following detailed description and to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a part of the inside of the buggy body, showing my locking device applied to the door. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken at the front edge of the seat, showing in detail a part of my device applied to the door, the door being open to its fullest extent. Fig. 3 is a detail of a curved piece of iron over which a foot pedal slides, the foot pedal being attached to a carrying track. Fig. 4 is a detail of a pocketed casting which secures the ends of the carrying track to the buggy body.
Referring to the drawing by numerals 1 is the sliding door which opens and closes the entrance to the buggy.
2 is the side quarter of the closed top.
3 is'the end panel of the buggy seat.
4- is the fall board which forms a part of the frame Work of the buggy body.
5 is the bottom of the seat.
6 is a part of the framework of the buggy body.
7 is the sill of the buggy body.
8 is a corner post which forms a part of the frame work of the buggy body.
9 is the side panel of the buggy body.
10 is a carrying track which is made to rock by a foot lever, 12, when it is pressed forward on curved iron, 11, and by its connection with 15 through 14, presses upward against 16 which through 17 presses outward Y against the door and the'friction thus created holds the door in any desired position and prevents its rattling. The rocking motion of 10 is reversed by placing 11 above 10, which is the preferable position for ll, and through 12, 10, 1 1, 15, 16 and 17 the door is drawn inward when 12 is pushed forward on corner post of the body at the other end, and
by its curved shape deflects the end of 12 as it moves forward onll, thereby rocking 10 to the right or left according as 11 is placed above or below 10.
12 is a foot pedal, which, when pressed forward on 11, rocks 10, and through 10, 1 1, 15, 16 and 17, draws 1 inward. 12, by the rocking motion which it gives to 10, creates friction in the loop 13, thereby holding the door in whatever position placed, and at the same time prevents rattling.
13 is a yoke by means of which 1 is attached to 10.
14 is an arm setat right angles to 10, connects 10 and15 and gives 15 an upward or downward movement when 10 is rocked by the forward movement of 12 on 11.
15 is a bar connecting 14: and 16 and when operated through 10 and 1 1 by the forward movement of 12 on 11,. operates 16 and 17,
which draws the door inward or presses it outward.
16 is a bell crank, or angular lever, which i is attached to 2 by means of a screw. It is connected with 15 and 17 by rivets. and when operated through 15, 14, and 10 by the forward movement of 12 on 11, draws the door inward or pushes it outward.
17 is a short bar with a button 22 at oneend, is attached-to 16, and engages 18 and l8 and is drawn inward-or pressed outward through 16, 15, 14 and 10 when 12 is pressed forward on 11, thereby d: awing the door inform a slot, into which, 17 is buttoned. When the pressure of the button on 17 against 18 and 18, caused by the forward movement of 12 on 11, is removed by the backward movement of 12 on 11, the door thendcan be moved freely backward and forwar 19 is a pocketed casting which attaches Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A sliding vehicle door combined with a rocking bar having a foot pedal attached and a lateral arm attached, a deflecting iron on which one end of the foot pedal slides, a bell crank or angular lever, and a connecting bar joining the rocking bar and the bell crank or angular lever, a yoke connecting the door with the rocking bar, two bars extending crosswise the door, parallel to each other, thus forming a slot between them, and a short bar having a button at one end, this bar connecting the bell crank or angular lever with the two parallel bars, substantially as described.
