ZIMRA SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 16, 1908.
semi No. 390,694.
Application filed August 30, 1907.
{formed thereon, opposite the opening 9, a lug, 15, to which an operating lever, 16, in the form of a bell crank, is pivotedv at its elbow with the -free end of its engaging or horizontal arm, 17, arranged to bear above the rear end of the latch member, while pivoted between its ends as at 1S, to the rear or inner face of the door, is a second operating lever, 19, provided at its rear end with a finger piece, 20, and at its forward end with an engaging portion or arm, 21, seated at its outer end above the rear end of the latch member, 11.
1n practice, when the door is closed, the portion 12 of the latch member will be seated and engaged within the keeper 7, and will be maintained. in engaging position by means of the spring, 13, as before explained. Under these conditions, when it is desired to release the door, the handle, 14, may be grasped and the vertical portion of the lever .16 swung outward, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, thereby causing the arm, 17, to depress the rear end of the latch member, 11, and swing the portion 12 thereof upward out of engagement with the keeper, whereupon the door may bereadily moved to open position. The door may, in like manner, be unfastened from the inner side by means of the operating lever, 19, the rear end'of which will, of course, be moved upward, thereby causing the arm 21 at its forward. end to depress the rear end of the latch 11 in a manner similar to the operation of lever 16.
1t is apparent that in the construction described, there is produced a simplified form of latch which may be conveniently applied to the door and which may be readily ma nipulated in the operation of locking or releasing the latter.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a device' of the class described, a door provided with a transverse socket and ya lateral opening` intersecting said socket, a door jamb provided with a keeper a latch member pivoted between its ends in said socket, with its rear end extending across said opening, a spring for pressing the latch member to latching position, an operating handle adjacent the opening and independent of the latch, and an operating lever pivotally mounted on the handle and having an arm extended into the opening and engaged above the rear end of the latch member.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Znunii T. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allen, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Sliding-Door Fasteners; and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. rThis invention relates to sliding door fasteners, and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied for use; one which may be conveniently operated at either side of the door, and one wherein the latch will be maintained in secure engagement with the keeper'.
With this object in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as'will be more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door equipped with a fastener embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 14; Fig. 3 is a sectional view'taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation of the lever at the inner or rear side of the door.
Referring to the drawings in which the invention is shown applied to a car door, 1 designates the door frame, in which is formed a doorway, 2, adapted to be closed by the door, 3, suspended from an overhead track or way, 1, by means of hangers, 5, equipped with rollers, 6, there being formed in the door jamb a socket or keeper, 7 and in the door 3, a transversely extending socket or recess, 8, intersected at its inner end by a lateral openinO', 9.
t ljivoted between its ends as at 10, within the socket 8, is a latch member 11 having an engaging portion, 12, to seat and engage with- 7 under the action of a bowed spring, 13, arranged in the recess S, beneath I the rear portion of the latch, and serves to normally hold the same in latching position,
the latch, which extends transversely across the opening, 9, disposed in an elevated position toward the upper end l of said opening.
Attached to the front face of the door is a substantially U-shaped handle, '14, having 2. In a device of the class described, a
5 oted between its ends having its rear end Within the socket and extended across said opening7 said latch member being formed for engagement with the keeper, a spring ar-v to press the latch memranged in the socket 10 ber to engaging posi to one face of the d tionI a handle attached oor and independent of the latch, and a bell crank lever pivoted to the handle and having an arm projected into the opening and arranged to engage above the rear end of the latch member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
