ROMANUS II. GOHMANN AND HENRY TERSTEGGE, OF NEV ALBANY,
INDIANA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-HALE TO THE FISCHER-LEAF COM- PANY, INCORPORATED, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
KICKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,666, dated April 7, 1896.
Application led May 18, 1894. Serial No. 511,678. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROMANUS I-I. GOH- MANN and HENRY TERSTEGGE, of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kickers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings7 is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to that type of means for opening stove-doors in which the kicker latch or lever has a beveled inner surface engaging a correspondinglybeveled lug on the door; and the object of the invention is to so construct the parts that the latch is interchangeably right or left hand.
To this end the invention consists in certain peculiarities in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claim.
In the annexed drawings similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all views, in which- Figure l is a broken end view of a stove with the improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a broken lower end view of the stove-door provided with the wedge-shaped projection hereinafter more fully explained. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the kicking-lever.77 Fig. i is a side view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a partial plan view showing the relation of the shelf and stove and showing a cut-out portion in the shelf, hereinafter more fully explained.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a stove, to which is provided one or more oven-doors B, hinged in the usual manner and of the same general appearance as is common in oven-doors, except that at the lower corner thereof, at the free end of the door, is provided a wedge-shaped piece b, cast on said door or otherwise secured thereto. This piece is shown as wedge-shaped; but it is only essential that the lower edge be beveled, as the lower edge is the only one which performs any function in the operation of the device.
Cast integra-l with the side of the stove, or set in position thereon, is a lug a, with an upturned end a at an angle to the line of greatest length, said lug serving as a support for a pivoted piece C C', which is hung in position on said lug in such relation to the door that the beveled end C' of said pivoted piece will lie next under the beveled lower side of the piece h on the door when the latter is closed, the piece l) being shown in dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings to more fully illustrate this point.
It is common to provide a shelf with most cook-stoves, which shelf will lie in line with the bottom of the oven for convenience of the person using such oven, the shelf forming a convenient rest for any pan or other article to be placed within the oven, and in the drawings the shelf is shown as cut away at S, so that the inner end of the pivoted piece C will lie upon said shelf and be supported thereby, and the cut-away portion is provided so as to give perfect freedom of movement to said' pivoted piece up and down.
The cut-away portion extends only far enough to permit the pivoted piece being hung on the lug a and is placed in such relation to such pivoted piece as to form a stop on the main portion of the shelf for the end C thereof to prevent said pivoted piece falling below its proper position at the end C.
In the drawings is shown a lug oo projecting from the stove, which lug may be used or not at the pleasure of the manufacturer, though where the shelf G is used such lug is immaterial to the operation of the device and need be used only in cases where no shelf is to be attached to the stove.
Attention to the details of the piece C C will disclose the fact that it is provided with an opening D, which has two slight osets d d, and that the end opposite from the handle portion C is provided with two beveled faces C C. The object of this formation is to enable the same piece being used as a right or left hand kicker, as occasion may require, the stud a having an upturned portion a entering the opening d, while the main stem of the stud a lls the opening D, thereby permitting the kicker C being readily placed in position on the stove and as readily taken off,
the part a performing the function of a stop to prevent any accidental displacement of said kicker.
The Whole device forms a convenient means for operating the oven-door, the simple pressure of the foot being suflicient to raise the beveled end C and press up on the beveled piece l), thereby raising the oven-door and gently opening the same Without in anylway straining the same.
Owing to the bevel at the lower side of the piece b the oven-door Will shut easily, rising over the beveled portion C of the lever C, leaving said level' in convenient position for opera-tion in opening the door B when required.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is- The combination with a stove-door, having on its inner side a lug formed with a beveled under surface, and astud having an upturned outer end, of a latch having an opening to receive said stud and its inner end formed With oppositely-beveled faces to engage said beveled lug on the door, said leverbeing pivotally mounted on said stud and held thereon by engagement of said upturned end with its outer surface and having a plurality of oisets through either of Which said upturned end may be passed in placing the lever in position, as described.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto signed our names, in the presence of two attesting Witnesses, at New Albany, in the county of Floyd, in the State of Indiana, this Qlth day of February, 189i.
