STOVE OR RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,348, dated November 26, 1895.
Application led April 1l, 1895. Serial No. 545,405. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DENNIS G. LITTLEEIELD, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of ANew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoves or ranges provided with devices for opening the oven-doors of the same by a foot-lever; and it consists in the combinations of devices and elements hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide, with the oven-door side plate provided with a door and a door-opening lever, a shelf and devices which operate to lock the shelf fast with the said side plate and cause the latter to hold the said lever in place for operation. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a face view of a side of an oven of a range or stove with the oven-door closed and shelf in place and embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view at line 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of a section of the parts with the shelf removed. Fig. 4 is a side view of the side plate of the stove or range (a portion thereof) with the locking elements of the same eX- posed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the shelf with its locking elements in view. Fig. 6 is a view of the locking-key, and Fig. 7 is a horizontal view taken at line 2 in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A is the side plate of the oven of a stove or range. Bis the oven-door, hinged by one of its ends to said side plate and having its free end provided with a catching device b for coaction with a catching device a, made with the side plate A.
C is a lever, designed to be operated by a foot of an operator, and acting, when pressed on, to raise the free end of the door to free the catching device b from engagement with the catching device a and then throw the free end of the door outwardly and away from the side plate. Dis the incline against which this lever C acts, which incline is preferably made integral with the free-end edge of the door and on a plane a little above the plane of the lower edge of the same. This incline is pref- Heretofore the lever C was pivoted by` means of a pintle or pin and knuckles to the side plate A, and the' shelf E was permanently secured by means of bolts to said side plate.
The lever C is shown to be provided with a knife-edge form of fulcrum c, which depends downwardly from about the middle of the 1 length of said lever and seated in seat s, shown to be provided in the top side of the skirt S ofl a plate secured to the side plate A. The upper limb of the said lever is provided with one or more shoulders c at a point on a line with the plane of the lower side of the shelf E. When this lever is suitably seated kby its fulcrum, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, its free end of the upper limb will be contained between the lip 'd and the edge of the door and also between the side plate A and depending holding-lip CZ', against which said free end of the lever pushes when moving the door out or away from the said side plate. A keeper e is provided with said lever for preventing it from raising and shifting in either direction edgewise. This keeper may be secured by any suitable means to the side plate A at a line with the shoulders c', and it receives in its notch-form opening o the contracted portion of the upper limb of the lever above said shoulder, as shown in Figs. 2 and 7. At present I consider it preferable to form the said keeper integral with shelf E, as the notchform opening 0 of this keeper may be readily formed in said shelf when the latter is eX- tended forwardly past the free-end edge of the door B. This shelf E is preferably made to be self-holding with the said side plate A by means of one or more oblong openings f, made in plate A, and one or more supporting-lips g, integral with said plate and on a line about on or a little below the line of the Plane of the lower edges of sai'd openings f, and a corresponding number of hooks h, integral with the inner side edge of the shelf E and adapted to enter said oblong openings, and when moved endwise in direction of arrow l in Fig. '7 catch with the metal of plate A and hold IOO with it, as shown in said Fig. 7. `When this shelf is so in place, the loWer side of the shelf at its inner edge will rest on the supportinglips g of the side plate A, as indicated by dotted lines in said figure. When these hooks h are in holding position, as shown in Fig. 7, the key F is dropped in place in the notch t', Figs. 5 and 7, and between the stops k 7c, Figs. 4L and 7, the notch i being formed in the rear side edge of the shelf, and the stops 7a being formed integral with plate A. lVhen the keeper e. is integral with shelf E, I provide the said keeper by forming in the rear-side margin the notch 0, Figs. 2, 5, and 7, which receives the contracted portion of the upper limb of the lever above the shoulders c of the saine, While the lower side of the metal adjacent said notch nearly touches said shoulders, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The combination with a side plate of a stove or range and a door hinged thereto and provided with a device catching With said plate and having integral With it' the incline D, of the lever U provided with a knife-edge form fulcrum c Working in seat s and one or more shoulders c', of the keeper e secured with said side plate and holding With the upper limb of said lever and at the said shoulders, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with the side plate A, having in it, below its door opening, one or more openings f and supporting lips g, g, and stops 7o k, of the shelf E provided With hooks 71., in number corresponding with the number of openings f and having in its rear side edge notch z', and the key F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
3. The combination With the side plate A, a door provided With incline D and hinged to said side plate, of lever C provided with a knife-edge form fulcrum c working in seat s, and With one or more shoulders c provided with its upper limb, of shelf E provided With notch o adapted to receive the contracted portion of the upper limb of said lever, at the shoulders c of the same, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
