G. M. GENTHNER. 000mm STOVE. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 19, 1912.

CHARLES M. GENTHNER, or MInDLE'rowN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WINCROF'I STOVE WORKS, OF IVIIIDDLETOWN, PENN VANIA.
SYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- COOKING-STOVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. GE 'rHNER,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cooking stoves, and particularly to an improved pivotally adjustable lidplate construction adapted to conveniently provide free access to the fire box for broiling or other purposes.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the novel features are specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a cooking stove having my invention applied thereto, the lidplate being in normal position. Fig. 2 is mainly a cross-sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; a partially raised position of the top plate being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a separate plan view of a portion of the top plate; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view thereof. Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional views of the lidplate and top-plate respectively, on the line 5-6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 indicates a slight modification.
In the drawing 2 indicates the rear wall of a cooking stove, and 4 the top plate; an extended portion 5 of which latter overhangs the wall 2 at the rear end of the fire box 6. This top plate is formed with the usual depressed ledge 8 for supporting the key or lid plate 10; said ledge however being provided as indicated with slightly raised stops 11, 11 behind which the bearing portions 12, 12 on the bottom flange of the lid plate are seated so as to permit of pivotally raising the opposite end of the latter. The top plate 5 is also provided with a ledge extension 14 having an aperture 15 for the passage of a counterbalance arm 16 of the lid-plate, leaving a stop bar 17 for positively limiting the pivotal raising movement of said lid-plate.
The counterbalance arm 16 of the lid-plate which is preferably separately formed and rigidly secured to the underside thereof as Specification of Letters Patent.

indicated, extends rearward therefrom in -a horizontal plane so as to lie closely under the overhanging top plate extension 5 when the lid-plate is in its normal lowered position; it being so shaped as to be passed downwardly through the aperture 15 of the ledge extension 14 until the bearing ribs 12 of the lid-plate are pivotally engaged in the seating portions 11 of the ledge 8, and adapted also to contact with the bar 17 of said ledge extension when the free end of the lid plate is raised to the limit of movement provided for. The outer end of the arm is adapted to be connected to a counterbalano ing weight 20, or an equivalent spring 21 as indicated in Fig. 7, to normally raise the lidplate; the extremity 22 of the arm being up turned as shown so as to bring the pivotal connection 23 for the preferred weight 20, somewhat above the pivotal bearing of the lid-plate, when the latter is in lowered position. To retain the lid-plate in this normal lowered position I provide it, near the swinging forward end, with a pivotal latch 25 adapted to automatically engage the topplate when the lid-plate is fully lowered; said latch having a suitable handle 26 for conveniently releasing it and controlling the swinging movement of the lid-plate as desired. Upon releasing the catch the lid-plate is automatically raised to the determined angle so as to leave the entire fire exposed, and it is returned to normal position by merely pulling it down by means of the handle 26 or by pushing it down with the lidlifter.
What I claim is 1. In a cooking stove the combination with a vertical side wall plate having a lid-arm aperture, and a top plate extending beyond said side wall plate and having a depressed lid-supporting ledge, of a lid plate pivotally mounted at one end upon said ledge and having a rigid arm extending from the edge thereof through said aperture, a counterbalance directly attached to the end of said projecting arm, and a top-plate-engaging catch at the opposite end of said lid plate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cooking stove the combination with a top plate extending beyond the rear wall thereof and having a depressed supporting In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaledge and a depending apertured stop eX- ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
tension, of a lid plate pivot-ally mounted at CHARLES M. GENTHNER.
one end upon said ledge and provided With a WVitnesses: 5 counterbalance arm extending through said CHARLES S. PRIZER, I
stop extension. GEO. E. DAILY.
