LIPPMANN RAPHAEL, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TVO- TI'IIRDS TO GEORGE P. MACKINTOSII AND WILLIAM HACKINTOSI'I, OF SAME inname.l
GARMENT-STRETCHING FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,603, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed April 29, 1895. Serial No. 547,597. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LIPPMANN RAPHAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Stretching Frames; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exa-ct description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the 1 o art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication. My invention relates to improvements in garment-stretching frames and has special reference to a frame adapted to stretch the garment and dry it in this shape; and the object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, which can be readily adjusted to various garments and upon which the drying will be effected without danger of shrinking` the garment, thus producing a practical device of this character.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a garment-stretching frame embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantiallyY as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a front elevation of my garment-stretching frame with the parts in the position they assume when applied to a shirt. Fig. 2 represents a side view of one of the side pieces of the frame. Fig. 3 represents a detail view of the top stretchingbar. Fig. i is a side view of one of the armsections. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the lower adjustable section for stretching the bottom oi the shirt. Fig. 6 represents a front elevation of my device applied for stretching a pair of drawers. Figs. 7 and S represent detail sectional views of the upper and lower stretching devices used on the device for stretching drawers, and Fi g. 9 represents a detail view of one of the side sections of the leg-stretching device.
In the drawings, A A designate the side pieces or bars of my frame, provided near their upper ends with mortises a to receive the lugs CL3 on the arm-stretching portion B, carrying at their outer ends the adjustable caps C, retained in place by means of a setscrew c and having a hook or catch c to engage the sleeve of the garment to hold it in place thereon.
The side bars or pieces A are further provided with the mortises a', which receive the lugs a2 on the sections b of the stretching devices. This stretching device is made hollow and is rendered adjustable by means of the right and left hand screws h', which engage the cross-pieces b2, integral with the sides of the hollow sections b, and this right and left hand screw is provided with a central adjusting-nut b5, by mea-ns of which the two sections can be easily adjusted to move the side pieces. This stretching device is specially constructed for the yoke or neck of a shirt or like garment, and to stretch the lower portion of the garment I employ the hollow stretching-sections D D, which are provided with crosspieces LS, formed integral with the sides of said hollow sections D D, with which engage the screws D, carrying or having the adjusting device or nut bf.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the side pieces are adj usted by means or the upper and lower adjusting devices and that the arm-adjusting devices are connected to the side pieces and have the clamps which secure and stretch the sleeve of the shirt, as clearly shown in Fig. l, and in Figs. 3 and 5 I show the peculiar construction of the upper and lower adjusting mechanism for the side pieces, and in Fig. 4 one ofthe arm supporting and stretching portions, and I provide the lower stretching devices with barbs or points b9, by means of which they will engage the garment and hold it in proper shape while being stretched.
My drawers-stretching device consists of the two sides or leg-sections E, having at their lower ends the clamp Il, having the clampingscrew f and hooks f for engaging the leg of the drawers. I also employ the upper stretching device E3, composed of two hollow sections e', having the integral cross-piece c2, in which is guided the right and left hand screws e4, on which is mounted the adjusting device IOO or nut e5, by means of which the hollow sections may be adjusted, and said sections are secured on the leg-sections by means of sockets e, which receive the lugs e of said sections. The lower adjusting or stretching device E2 consists also of the hollow sections e', having cross-pieces e2, right and left hand screws e4, carrying adjusting-nut c5, the only dierence being that said section E2 has the reduced ends e7, which fit in openings @10 of the leg-sections.
In order that I may hang my device upon a hook or other support, I provide the bail b3, having its ends connected to the hooks b4, as will be apparent.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my invention will readily be understood, and further comment thereon is deemed unnecessary.
I provide the lower adj Listing-sections D D at their outer ends with a slot c4, which slots receive the members A A and permit the parts D D to be moved or adjusted on said sections, and to secure the parts D D, I employ two setscrews b1", which engage the sides A A, and holding the lower stretching device at any desired adjustment on the side.
I claim- 1. A garment-stretching frame comprising two side bars or members, an upper and lower stretching device each composed of two members having their outer ends connected to said side members and their inner ends provided with means for moving them to and from each other, and the limb members connected to said side members, said limb members carrying clamps having hooks thereon, the clamps being adjustable on the limb members.
2. A garment-stretching frame consisting of two sides, arm-sections connected to said sides near their upper ends, clamps adjustably secured to and carried by said arm-sections, hooks on said clamps to engage the garment, an upper and lower stretching device connected to the side bars and consisting each of two sections having right and left hand screws for adjusting them, and barbs on the lower stretching device to engage the garment.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LIPPMANN RAPHAEL.
