Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Mosns COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining-Couches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reclining couches and has for its object, the provision of a couch which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is especially adapted to be used in hospitals and the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a couch formed of two frames pivotally connected together and means for adjusting one of the frames in respect to the other frame and holding the same in adjusted position.

Another object of the invention is to provide afoot rest for the main frame, which is adjustably mounted in order to allow the same to be swung into different positions for clamping the bed clothes in position upon the couch.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.

In the drawing-Figure 1, is a top plan view of my improved constructionof reclining couch; Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, is a side elevation showing the movable frame arranged at an incline; Fig. 4, is an end view of the same; and Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the couch in folded position.

Like numerals of reference refer .to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a pair of rectangular frames 1 and 2 preferably formed of angled irons pivotally connected together, as shown at 3, provided with suitable stops 4 which are adapted to be brought into engagement when the frames 1 and 2 are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so as to hold the same firmly in position.

The frames are provided with reticulated spring fabric bottoms 5 upon which is adapted to be placed, a suitable water proof mattress, not shown.

Spaced from the end of the main frame of legs 6 connected together by 2 and pivotally connected thereto, are a pair a brace 7, theoutward movement by stops 8 as clearly shown; said legs being capable of beingfolded into the position shown in Fig. 5, when not in use.

Pivotally connected to the opposite end of the main frame 2 is a pair of legs 9 connected together by a brace rod 10 upon which is mounted, pivoted braces. 11 provided with hooked ends 12 adapted to embrace lateral pivoted pins 13 carried by the side bars of the frame 2 for holding said legs in the position shown in Fig. 3.

The frames 1 and 2 are connected together by links 14: and 15 forming arm rests, the link 15 being pivotally mounted upon the pivot 13 and the link lt'being pivotally connected to the side bars of the frame 1.

The frame 1 is provided with laterally projecting pins 16 upon which are mounted rack bars 17 connected by a bar 18, said rack bars cooperating with the connecting brace 10 of the legs 9 in order to hold the frame 1 in its adjusted position in respect to the frame 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and it will be seen that when the frame 1 is swung into an inclined position, the arm rests are moved into such a position that a person reclining upon the couch will be held between the arm rests in order to prevent the bed clothing and the like, from moving from the couch, or the person accidentally falling off of the same.

The side bars of the frame 2 are provided with a series of threaded bores 19 into which is adapted to extend, thumb screws 20 upon which is pivotally mounted a foot rest 21 formed of angled irons con nected together by a cross bar 22 and it will be seen that by this construction, the foot rest can be adjusted lengthwise upon the frame 1 or thrown into an inclined position and locked, in order to hold the clothing in position upon the couch.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a knock-down reclining couch, composed of a very few parts so arranged and connected together that the same can be adjusted to different positions when used as a couch and when stored, can be folded into very compact form.

I olalm: A reclining couch, comprising a frame of which, is limited having a series of threaded bores in the side bars thereof at one end, thumb screws mounted in one pair of bores, a foot rest comprising a substantially inverted U- shaped frame having angled legs pivotally mounted upon said thumb screws and capa ble of being folded inwardly upon the side bars of said frame, said thumb screws forming means for clamping the angled legs of said frame against the Outer faces of 1D the side bars of the frame for holding said U-shaped frame in adjusted position.
