FOLDING-BED SUPPORT SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,589, dated March 3, 1891.

To all whom it may concern/.-

Be it known that I, HARVEY WADDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of .Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding-Bed Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in supports for the foot portions of that class of folding beds which in their folded conditions extend in a more or less Vertical plane and are unfolded by being swung down to the horizontal plane upon pivotal supports at the head; and my object is to provide a support or leg for the foot or swinging end of a bed of the above class which when the bed is folded will be out of the way, so as not to detract from the appearance of the bed, and which as the latter is unfolded will adjust itself automatically to perform its function.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in broken side elevation of a folding bed of the class named provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, an enlarged broken sectional View of the swinging end of the bed in upright position, showing my improved support in its folded condition; and Fig. 3, a view similar to the last, but showing the bed in its horizontal position and the support unfolded.

A is the frame or head portion of a folding bed, and B the swinging body portion, of which 13' is the foot.

0 is a folding support, comprising a leg 0, extending through an opening 15 in the front of the part B adjacent to one of the side rails B The leg is pivotally secured at its inner end to one end of a link 0 which at its opposite end is pivoted at s to the inner surface of the adjacent side rail B The opening t is just large enough to permit the leg 0 to slide readily through it, and on its opposite sides 15' t it is beveled inward, as shown, to permit the leg to oscillate at its opposite ends, when it is moved, as hereinafter described. The outer end of the leg 0' is beveled, as shown, and near the said end the leg is formed with a stop r,whieh is too large to pass through the guide-opening t, and operates to hide the said opening when the bed is raised and the support is folded. The link 0 is formed with an extension (1 on one side to weight the link on that side and facilitate its operation, as hereinafter described.

hen the bed is raised, the leg and link of the folding support are in the positions shown in Fig. 2. As the bed is swung downward the weight of the leg and weighted side q of the link causes the latter to swing on its pivot s to the position shown in Fig. 3, causing the leg to project at an angle downward from the bed to afford a support for the latter which will sustain it the proper distance from the floor. Between the pivot s and opening 25 is a stop p on the side rail, against which the swinging end of the link 0 strikes as it and the leg 0 reach the positions shown in Fig. 3. The weight of the bed upon the leg causes the latter to be pressed firmly against the stop p and side 15 of the opening 25 and bind it between those surfaces, so as to relieve the pivot s from the strain which it would otherwise have to bear. When the bed is raised to its upright or folded position, the operator, by pushing the leg 0 inward, will cause it and the link C to fold, as shown in Fig. 2. To prevent the impact of the stop 1" against the surface of the bed when the support is pushed in from injuring the said surface, a stop 0 is provided for the link to strike against as the stop 4- reaches the said surface.

The bed is provided with two folding supports 0, of similar construction, at opposite sides, and, constructed as described,they afiord a firm and durable support for the foot of the bed, which does not detract from the appearance of thelatt-er when it is raised.

hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a folding bed, the combination,with the verticallyswinging body portion, of an extensible and folding support for the foot portion, comprising a link pivoted at one end to the said body portion, a leg pivotally connected with the free end of the link, and a guide on the said body portion through which the leg reciprocates in the folding and extending operations of the said support, substantially as described.

2. In a folding bed, the combination, with the vertically-swinging body portion, of an extensible and folding support for the foot portion, comprising a link pivoted at one end to the said body portion, a leg pivotally connected with the free end of the link, aguideopening in the said body portion through which the leg reciprocates in the folding and extending operations of the said support, and a stop 29 on the said body portion for limiting the movement of the link, substantially as described.

3. In a folding bed, the combination, with the vertically-swinging body portion, of an extensible and folding support for the foot portion, comprising a link weighted at one side and pivoted at one end to the said body portion, a leg pivotally connected with the free end of the link, a guide-opening in the said body portion through which the leg reciprocates in'the folding and extending operations of the said support, and a stop 17 on the said body portion for limiting the movement of the link, substantially as described.

4. In a folding bed, the combination, with the vertically-swim gin g body portion, of an extensible and folding support for the foot portion, comprising a link pivoted at one end to the said body portion, a leg pivotally connected with the free end of the link, a guideopening in the said body portion through which the leg reciprocates in the folding and extending operations of the said support, a stop 1) on the said body portion for limiting the movement of the link, and a stop r011 the leg" beyond the guide-opening, substantially as described.

5. In a folding bed, the combination, with the vertically-swinging body portion, of an extensible and folding support for the foot portion, comprising a link pivoted at one end to the said body portion, a leg pivotally connected with the free end of the link, a guide opening in the said body portion through which the leg reciprocates in the folding and extending operations of the said support, and stops p and 0 on the said body portion at opposite sides of the link, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
