Description
l. A. MURPHY.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 15. I919.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ANDREW MURPHY, or PUEBLO, COLORADO.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and more particularly to a wheeled toy.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a toy which may be drawn along the floor or ground and afford amusement to both the old and young.
Another object of the invention is the construction of the toy'in such a manner that movement will be imparted to figures forming a part of said toy.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following specification and drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Y Fig. 3 is a fragmental detailon the line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a platform provided on the under side with the depending front brackets 2 and depending rear brackets 3. A shaft & is rotatably mounted in the front brackets 2 and wheels 5 are connected to each end of the shaft. A shaft 6 is rotatably mounted in the rear brackets 3 and wheels 7 are secured on each end of said shaft. The shaft 6 is provided intermediate the ends with a crank 8 the purpose of which will be later described.
A figure 9 is supported on the platform 1, adjacent the rear end, and the leg 10 of the figure is permanently secured to the platform and is provided with a vertically extending slot 11. A leg 12 extends through the slot 11 and is pivotally connected to the figure 9 at 13. An opening 1 1 is provided in the leg 12, near the inner end, and a vertically extending rod 15 has one end connected in the opening and the opposite end passes through the bottom of the leg and through an opening 16 formed in the platform 1. The lower end of therod 15 is formed with an eye 17 which receives the crank 8 of the shaft 6. The figure 9 is pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

' vided with a horizontally extending arm 18 which is adapted to engage the back of a figure 19 supported upon the platform adj acent the front end thereof. The figure 19 is open at the top as indicated at 20 and is provided with a stationary leg 21 which is adapted to be secured to the top of the plat form 1. The leg 21 is provided in the front wlth a vertically extending opening 22 and in the back with an elongated opening 23. A leg 24 has its upper end extending through the vertically extending opening 22 and is pivotally connected in the figure at 25. A pin 26 is secured to the leg 24, adjacent the pivot' point 25, for a purpose to be later described. A lever 27 extends through the elongated slot 23 and is pivotally connected at 28. This lever is provided on the inner end with a downwardly extending portion 29 which is adapted to engage the pin 26 as more particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The outer end of the lever 27 extends a sufiicient distance out of the figure so as to be engaged by the end-of the leg 12 of the figure 9 when said leg 12 is raised as indicated in the drawings. A head 30 is pivotally connected in the open end 20 at 31 and avertically extending rod 32 is connected to the head at 33. This rod 32 passes downward through the figure and through the leg 21 and through an opening 34: formed in the platform 1. A bell crank lever 35 is pivotally connected under the platform at 36 and the rod 32 is connected to the upper end of said bell crank'lever. A rod 37 is pivotally connected at 38 to the lower arm of the bell crank lever 35 and extends horizontally under the platform 1 and is formed on the opposite end with an eye 39 adapted to receive the crank 8 of the shaft 6. The figure 19 is provided with an arm and hand 40 which is adapted to receive a dagger indicated at 40.
Having fully described the detailed construction of my toy it is thought that the advantages and mode of operation will be clearly understood. As stated in the objects the toy is adapted to be drawn alongthe ground or floor and the movement of the back Wheels 17 will impart rotary movement to the shaft 7 and crank 8. The rod 15 being operated vertically will swing the leg 12 upwardly so as to engage the end of the lever 27. The lever 27 will swing upon the pivot 28 so that the extension 29 will operate downwardly and engage the pin 26.
ure and as shown the back figure will be in the act of kicking the front figure, and this kicking movement Will impart a Walkingmovement to the front figure. The toy Will afford amusement for both the old and young and is of such simple construction that it may be cheaply made and sold. I
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what maybe considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention, It is to be understood that I make such changes inconstruction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc, as may prove expedient and fall Within the scope of the ap pended claims.
Having fully described my invention What .I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy comprising a Wheel supported platform, figures .mounted upon the plat-- form, a leg pivotally connected to each figure, means connected to the Wheels for imparting movement to the pivoted leg of one figure, and means engaged by the leg of that figure for operating the leg of the other figure. a p
2. A toy comprising a wheel supported platform, a figure mounted upon the platform, a leg pivotally connected to the figure, a horizontally extending pin connected to the leg, a lever pivotally connected to the figure and adapted to engage the pin, and
means operated by the Wheels for engaging the lever for operating the leg.
3. A toy comprising a platform mounted upon Wheels, a front and rear figure mounted upon the platform, a leg pivotallyconnected to the front figure, a horizontally extending pin secured to the leg, a lever pivotally connected to the front figure and adapted to engage the pin, a leg pivotally connected to the rear figure, and adapted to engage the lever of the front figure, and means connected to the Wheels for operating the leg of the rear figure.
4:. A toy comprising a Wheel supported platform, front and rear figures mounted upon the platform, a head pivotally connected to the front figure, a leg pivotally connected to the front figure, a horizontally extending pin connected to the log, a lever pivotally connected to the figure and adapted to engage the pin, a leg pivotally connected to the rear figure and adapted engage the lever of the front figure, and means operated by the Wheels for swinging the head of the front figure and leg of the rear figure.
, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN ANDREW MURPHY.
