FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 569,202, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed May 11, 1895.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HorsAPILLAR, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw-- ings.
The object of my invention is to produce improved simple mechanism-for directly actuating the movable part of a folding bed, so as to raise it into the closed position or lower it into the open position readily and easily.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of my bed partly open, looking toward the front part thereof. Fig. II is a similar View looking toward the rear thereof; and Fig. III is a central vertical section of the bed open, looking toward the actuating mechanism.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the base of my bed, which is preferably provided in its front part with a boX 2, covered by a hinged lid 8. The sides of the base extend rearward and support the upright frame 4.
4 indicates the upright frame of -my bed, which is preferably detachably fastenedto the base by means of dowel-pins 5 and hooks and eyes 6 and 7, respectively. The upright frame is designed to act as a case for the movable 'part or bed-frame proper, 8, as is usual in beds of this description. To the inner end of the bed-frame 8 a foot-piece 9 is hinged, designed as a support for the frame when it is lowered and as an ornamental finish for the upper part of it when it is raised.
The bed-frame 8 is secured by hinges 10 at some distance from the inner end of the frame to the base 1, and upon these hinges it swings into the vertical and horizontal positions, respectively.
For actuating the bed-frame proper I employ a head-piece 11, hinged, as indicated at 12, to the end piece 13 of the bed-frame. For
directing Y the movement of the head-piece Iv employ a guide-piece 14. The guide-piece 14 is provided with hooks 22 and 23, and is hinged, as indicated at 15, to a piece adjustably secured by abolt or screw to the back piece 16 of the upright frame and passing Serial No. 548,928. (No model.)
througha guide-loop 17, that is secured to the head-piece 11. lBy this arrangement the movement ofthe head-piece is rendered regular and even, while at the same time sufficient play of the parts is allowed for the movement of the hinges 12.
By raising and depressing the head-piece 11 pivotal movement may be imparted to the bed-frame 8 to raise and lower it. I therefore provide upon the head-piece 1l, near one of its upper corners, a windlass-frame 18, and upon itmount a windlass 19, that is operated by a crank-handle 20, projecting beyond the side of the upright frame. Around the windlass a flexible vcord or connectingpiece 21 is wrapped a sufficient number of times to give the windlass a purchase upon it. The ends of the cord or connecting-piece are fastened, respectively, to the upper and lower part of the guide-piece, as-indicated at 22 and 23, by hooks or other suitable means. By this arrangement, upon operating the windlass a direct movement to the head-piece 11 is imparted, which, in the manner above described, operates the bed-frame as' is required.
It may be observed that the arrangement of the connecting-piece serves to render the action of raising and of lowering the bed-y frame a direct one, while at the same time the windlass performs the` ofce of a brake.
to prevent the too rapid descent of the bedframe. v
What I claim isl 1. In a folding bed the combination with a base and upright frame a bed-frame hinged' to the base a foot and head piece hinged to the bed-frame, a guide-piece adjustably secured to the upright frame a windlass secured to the head-piece a iiexible cord wrapped around the windlass and one end secured to the upright frame and the other end to the guide-piece substantially as specified.
2. In a folding bed the combination with a base and upright frame a bed-frame pivoted upon the base a head-piece hinged to the bed-framea windlass carried thereon a guidepiece adj ustably secured to the upright frame a iiexible cord wrapped laround the windlassy and secured at its opposite ends to the upright frame and guide-piece a guide- IOO loop secured to the head-piece for the reception of the guide-piece for the pupose substantially as specied.
3. In a folding bed the combination with a 5 base and upright frame and pivoted bedframe, a head-piece hinged to the bed-frame the ends ofthe cords are fastened, secured to the upright frame and to the guide-piece respectively for the purpose substantially as specified.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto y subscribed my name.
JACOB HoTsAPILLAR,
Witnesses O. W. DUsTIN, O. J. BARD.
