EXTENSIBLE BED.
maniac.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 8, 1918. Serial No. 233,339.
T 0 all wkom'zt may concern Be it known that I, NEIL Sinners, a citiresiding at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extensible Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in extensible beds and has special reference to the means for balancing the weight of the mattress and frame therefor so as to render it easy to swing; the latter from a vertical to position, or in a reverse direction.
One objectof the invention is to provide such means which will be compact in form, and which, in the movement of the bed, will not become unduly stretched.
In the accompanying dr wing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head portion of: a bed embodying my invention and in a position intermediate between its extended and its collapsed positions; Fig. 2 is a broken side. view of the head-of the bed in its collapsed position; Fig. dis a similar view thereof in its extended position; Fig. 4 is a detail front view, certain parts being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the head of an extensible bed, the top of which is adapted to be pivoted, as by an angle bar 2, on the edge of the closet door. lhis feature, however, forms no part of my present invention. To the side members 3 of said bed head are secured rear portions of plates or brackets 4. Said plates or brackets may thus be consider d as forwardly extending parts thereof. 0 the upper front corners of said brackets are pivoted, by bolts 5, castings 6, which are curved so that their ends fit closely against the outer sides of the I 7 of a mattress frame 8 of ordinary cofstru'ction and are bolted thereto. A rod 9 extends transversely between the brackets v6 and its ends are secured in ,the lower fronte rncrs thereof.
which secure the upper ends of the castings 6 to the side members also extend through plates 11, which fit closely againstthe inner sides of said side members, and also extend through the outer ends of side members 12 of a U-shaped frame'l the central member 14- of which extends transversely beneath the mattress frame. Said 12 are also pivotally secured near their centers to ends of links 16, other extensible. spring connected at one end The ends of which have apertures through which the rod 9 extends loosely. Helical springs 17 terminate in hooks 18, 19, the hooks 18 engagingholes in a transverse bar 21 form ing: part of the mattress frame andv the hooks 19 engaging the central member 14 of the lJ-shaped frame. Said central member 14: has secured thereto depending feet 21, which, in the extended position of the bed, are adapted to rest upon the ground and additionally support the mattress frame.
By comparing the position of the mattress frame in Fig. 2 with its position'in Fig. 3 it will readily be seen that, as the bed is lowered for use, the springs 17 are stretched,

and, consequently, said springs counterbalance the weight of the bed while it is being For the same reason they assist collapsed position. t are curved outlowered. in raising the bed to its The brackets or plates wardly in the center so as accommodate at the head of 1. The combination of a bed head having forwardly extending portions, a mattress frame between said forwardly extending portions and' pivoted thereon, a frame, side members of which are pivotally connected at their free ends to said mattress frame, a link limitinp the movement of said frame from a forwardly extending portion of said the bed and the pillows.
extension, and a spring connected at one end to said frame and at the other end to the mattress frame. p
. 2. The combination of a bed head having forwardly extending portions, a mattress frapie between said forwardly extending portions and pivoted on upper portions thereof. a frame, side members of which are plvotally connected at their free ends to said mattress f ame, a link limiting the movementof said frame from a forwardly extending portion of said extensiom and an to said fi'ame and at the other end to the mattress frame nearer the head of the bed than the mattress frame pivots.
3. The combination of a bed head having forwardly wtending portions, a mattr ss frame between said forwardly extending portions and pivoted on upper portions iting the movement of said U-shaped frame to more readily, the portion ofthe bed clothes from a forwardly extending portion of said extension,
and-a spring at each side of the connected at one end to said frame and at the other end to the mattress frame.
4%, The combination of a bed head having forwardly extending portions, a inittress frame between said forwardly extending portions and pivoted on upper portions thereof, a rod extending between and secured to forwardly extendlng portions of said extensions, a irame having portions arranged to rest upon the floor when the bed is extended for use, and sin! of which are piyptally eonnec-teg at their free ends to said mattress frame, links pivotally connecteri each at one end tomediate portions of said side members, end. at the other end connected to said transverse rod, and a spring connected at one end to frame and at the other end to the mattress frame.
