Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID BASGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COUGH REMEDY.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,952, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 227,961. (Specimens) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID BASOH, a citizen of the United States, residing atNew York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cough Medicines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a new medical manufacture for the amelioration and cure of coughs and hoarseness and irritations generally in the throat or adjacent parts.
In carrying out this invention I first prepare a new balsamic compound composed as follows: Itake of Batess Anodyne Balsam (composed of soap, opium, camphor, oil of rosemary, and alcohol) one-half part, byweight; Friars balsam, (also known as compound tincture of benzoin one part,by weight, and spirits of lavender, one part, by weight, and mix them intimatelytogether. This preparation forms the essential part of the new man ufacture and is the chief element in the same.
Having prepared the said balsamic compound, the same is mixed with a solution of sugar in the following manner: Five pounds of sugar are dissolved in waterand then heated in an open vessel until it becomes of the consistency of thick jelly. Its condition is ascertained by cooling a few drops. There is then added thereto, while heated, two ounces of the said balsamic compound, and the mixture is kept boiling, with frequent stirring, until on testing it is found that it will readily form and harden into separate drops, or be in the condition as to solidity and hardness of what is sometimes called pancandy, but it may be prepared, if desired, in a softer condition. It
I can be used in a similar manner to troches and such like articles. It removes from the throat of the patient the irritation which causes o coughing, and has a healing and soothing influence on the parts affected with the disorder.
I do not restrict myself to the above proportions of the mixture of the said balsamic compound and sirup, as the proportions may 5 be varied without departing from the invention. Another proportion which gives satisfactory results is as follows: Five parts of the balsamic compound and fifteen parts of the sirup mixed together, as above mentioned. 5 Sirup may be substituted for sugar in my invention.
WVhat-l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a compound produced from the described anodyne balsam, (including soap, opium, camphor, oil of rosemary, and alcohol,) Friars balsam, (compound tincture of benzoin,) spirits of lavender, and a saccharine substance, substantially as specified.
2. The balsamic compound above described, composed of anodyne balsam, one-half part,by
weight; Friars balsam, one part, by weight,
and spirits oflavender, one part, by weight, mixed together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID BASOH. [n s] Witnesses:
