Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS J; BELL, or COLLEGE commit, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS 0R ETHEREAL OILS FOR TREATING RHEUMATISM. he.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,666, dated February 13, 1872; antedated January 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS J. BELL, of College Corner, in the county of J ay and State of Indiana, have invented a certain medicinal compound called Ethereal Oil; and I do hererye whisky; one ounce and one-half columbo' root; one ounce and one-half blood root; one ounce gentian; two ounces gum guaiacum. Of the above Tincture Bitters add four ounces to a mixture of ten ounces best glycerine and ten ouncessulphur water, to betemporarilysetaside in a suitable vessel, while a second mixture is made of the following ingredients: ten ounces oil of Sassafras; seven ounces oil of hemlock; seven ounces oil of origanum; one ounce oil of spike; sixouncesoilofaleohol; eightounces gum camphor out in one ounce and one-half of ether. These two mixtures are then added to one gal- 1011 and one quart boiled linseed-oil, mixed while being hot with one-half ounce litharge.
The mixed linseed-oil and litharge should be well skimmed and left to cool before the above two mixtures are added. To the compound thus prepared add one ounce of pure olive-oil, when it will be ready for use. i
This compound is a specific for many diseases, such asrheumatism, nervous complaints, coughs, skin diseases, bruises, 850. The afl'ected parts should be bathed with the ethereal oil twice a day, and in inward diseases it must be taken inwardly twice a day, in doses varying from twenty to thirty drops for grown persons, and for children from ten to fifteen, best administered on sugar.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The manufacture or preparation of a compound which is denominated Ethereal Oil, of the ingredients, in the proportions, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed myname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEWIS J. BELL.
