SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,943, dated May 31, 1887.
Application filed October 14. 1886. Serial No. 216.209. (No model.)
T 'aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. BAILEY, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Umbrella-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
A strip of elastic or flexible material is usually employed as a tie to pass'around the umbrella and hold the flexible covering after it is rolled up, and a ring at the end of the tie is usually passed over a button. This, however, does not lie flat, and it projects objectionably, especially when there is a cover or case put over the umbrella.
My improvement is intended for facilitating 1 the fastening of the end of the tie after it has been wrapped around the umbrella, and lessening the expense of the tie and fastening.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the tie and a portion of the umbrella around which it is passed. Fig. 2 shows the hook-piece in larger size; Fig. 3, the T-piece. Fig. 4 represents the parts of the fastening and portions of the tie as ready to be hooked together, and Fig. 5 represents the T-piece when made of wire. Fig. 6 illustrates the manner of securing-the tie to the wire T-piece.
The hook-piece A is notched at one edge and bent up to form the hooks 3, and there are holes 4 through the same, by which the hook- 0 piece A can be sewed to thetie and to the covering of the umbrella, and it is preferable to provide a slot, 5, in the hook-piece for one end of the tie B to be passed through and folded back and sewed, as at 6, Fig. 4, or the 5 sewing through the holes 4 may be made use of. The T-piece 0 may be made of wire bent up in the form shown in Fig. 5; but usually it will be of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 3. The center part, 7, of the T-piece passes into the notch 8 between the books 3, and the ends 9 are received into the hooks 3 when the tie is fastened, and the parts are easily disconnected by unhooking the T'piece G from the hookpiece A. I
The T-piece is to be connected to the tie B in any suitable manner. \Vhen it is made of wire, the tie is threaded through the loop portion 10 and sewed together, and then the shank 7 is sewed to the tie, as shown at 11, Fig. 6; but wherethere are teeth 12 in the loop 10, as shown in Fig. 3, these teeth can be passed through the fabric of the tie, so as to render sewing unnecessary.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the flexible umbrellatie B, of the hook-piece A, having the hooks 3.and notch 8, and an opening at 5, by
which one end of the umbrellatie is fastened to said piece A, and the T-piece 0, having a body, 7, and projecting ends 9, and having a loop by which it is attached near the other end of the flexible umbrella-tie, substantially as set forth.
2. The T-picce 0,. having the body 7, projecting ends 9, and teeth 12, by which the T- piece is connected to the umbrella tie, in combination with the hook-piece A, with the hooks 3, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 30th day of September,
1886. HENRY O. BAILEY.
