BERTHA CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRAW-STRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed March 10, 1914. Serial No. 823,709.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bnn'rHA CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Draw-String, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved draw stringer band designed for use in the hem of a washable garment and arranged to enable the user to readily place the draw string into the hem or to remove ittherefrom whenever it is desired to wash the garment, to prevent one end of the draw string from accidentally slipping into the hem while passing the other end through the hem, and to allow of securely and quickly connecting and disconnecting the ends of the draw string. In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made offa draw string adapted to be insorted in the hem of a garment and fastening means attached to the ends of said draw string for fastening the ends together, one of the said end members having retaining means adapted to engage one end of the hem to hold this member against slipping into the hem.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in allthe views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the draw string as applied to the hem in the waistband of a skirt, the end members of the draw string being in open position; Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the end members of the draw string; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the draw string with the end members connected with each other.
The draw string F is adapted to engage the hem G in the waistband of a skirt, and on the ends of the draw string F are attached the members H and I, of which the member H is in the form of a loop adapted to engage the button I of the member I, the button I having its base attached to or merging with a hook I in the form of a return bend of the plate I provided with a slot It engaged by the doubled-up end of the draw string F. The loop member H is in the form of a bodkin and is passed through copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of ratenta,
the hem G and the member I is hooked onto the end of the hem G to prevent this member from slipping into the hem during the time the loop member H is passed through the hem and out of the, other end thereof. When this has been done the loop member H is fastened by a few stitches J to theback of the hem G, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The large end. of the opening H of this member H now extendsrearwardly and is engaged with the head of the button, and then the shank of the button I is engaged with the forward small end of the opening H so that the button I is securely held in place on the loop member H, and the two members are covered up by the now closed hem G of the waistband (see Fig. 4) so that a very neat finish is given to the waistband of the skirt when the latter is closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A draw string adapted to be inserted in the hem of a garment, a loop attached to one end of the said draw string, and a combined button and hook attached to the other end of the said draw string, the hook being adapted to hook onto one end of the hem of the garment, the button being on the free end of the said hook, and projecting outwardly opposite the hem and a distance from the said hem end.
2. A draw string adapted to be inserted in the hem of a garment, a combined loop and bodkin attached to one end of the said draw string and adapted to overlie the inner face of one end of the said hem, and a combined button and hook having a plate attached to the other end of the said draw string, the plate having at its forward end a return bent hook adapted to hook onto the open end of the hem of the garment, and a button on the free end of the said hook and adapted to be engaged by the said combined bodkin and loop, the said button extending outwardly opposite the hem and a distance from the end. thereof engaged by the hook. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
