PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN E. sAEEoLn E' ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.A
SKIRT AND WAIST ADJUSTER.
SECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,478, dated' une 9, 1903 Application filed July 11, 1902. v Serial No. 115,2D9. (No model.)
a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt and Waist Adjusters; and If do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates, primarily, to wearingapparel, has especial reference ,to waistband fasteners and adjusters for ladies skirts, and consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the fol lowing speciiication and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the members of the fastener connected together; Fig'. 2, a like Vview of the intermediate member, detached;
Fig. 3, a like view of a modied form of the intermediate member, also detached; Fig. 4, a rear elevation showing the fastener attached to a skirt, and Fig. 5 a plan or top view of the same.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates one of the horizontal members of the device, which is preferably madeof sheet metal and stamped into form, with holes a, by which it is secured to the fabric or waistband of a skirt X by thread or in any preferred manner, and is provided with a pointed prong or spur t on one side of the member designed to embed in the fabric of the waistband to hold the same in position on the member and prongs b on the opposite side of the memberLwhich eng'age the fabric of a shirt-waist and vprevent its riding up on the body of the wearer and also serves to support the weight of the back part ofthe skirt by the shirt-waist, and at the inner end'of the member A is an opening c to receive the end of the arm d of the intermediate member of the fastener and adjuster.
Y The opposite horizontal member B is bent part of the member is also provided with spurs h' for engaging the fabric of a shirt? waist 'to hold the waist in position, and spurs i on the opposite side and near the outer end thereof, which embed in the fabricof the waistband or skirt .X vand resist strain on the fastener when in use. The overlapping .part k of the member B, formed by the bend `ber is permanently and rigidly secured to the member A through the medium of a hook o on the outer end of said arm,'which is pressed down hard upon the member, or it may be secured thereto by riveting through the end o of the member shown in Fig. 3 and arm 19, which is provided with a locking member lcomprising a head q, a neck r, and slots s, one on each side of the neck, to engage the slot on in the part l: of member B. The slots s engage the body of the member on the sides of the contracted part of the slot, or the arm p may be provided with a hook p', as shown in Fig. 3, to enter theslots m. The member C is also provided with a vertical arm t, preferably at a right angle to the arms d and p, as shown, and on the outer end of said armi is a projection u to engage the upper edgeof a belt worn around the waist of the wearer.
The members 'A and B- are secured to opposite ends of a skirt-waistband, leaving one side thereof and one side of the part 7c exposed, the former on the inside of the waistband, so that the prongs b and h shall engage the fabric of a shirt-waist, and the member k folds over the waistband and has its outer surface exposed. The head Qofhook p is inserted in one of the slots m of the overlapping part la and may bereadily detachedV to disengage the waistband when it isdesired IOO or riding'up of the shirt-waist to the great annoyance of the wearer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I'claim is- 1. A garment fastener or skirt adjuster comprising two opposite members, one of which is provided with a slot, and an intermediate member having oppositely-extending arms, one of which arms is permanently secured to one of the aforesaid members, and the other arm provided with means to engage the slot in the other member, and a vertical arm to engage a belt.
2. A garmentfastener or skirtadjuster comprising two opposite members provided with means for securing them to a waistband, one of said members having one of its ends bent back upon itself in the direction of the length of the member and provided with slots in advance of each other in combination with a member having oppositely-extending arms, one of which arms is permanently secured to one of the aforesaid members, and the other arm provided with means to engage the slots in the other member, and a vertical arm to engage a belt.
3. A garment or skirt adjuster comprising two opposite members, each provided with spurs on one side thereof to engage the fabric to which'the members are secured, one of which members is also provided with a slot, and an intermediate member having oppositely-extending arms, one of which arms is permanently secured to one of the aforesaid members, and the other arm provided with means to engage the slot in the other member, and a vertical arm to engage a belt.
4. A skirt and waist adjuster, comprising two opposite members provided with spurs on oneside thereof to engage a shirt-waist, a slot in one of said members, an intermediate member having oppositely-extending arms, one of which arms is permanently secured to one of the aforesaid members, and the other arm provided with means to engage the slot in the other member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
