To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josurrr P. BAUMGART- Nun, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelr phia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Garter- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices intended to secure a garter to a stocking, or for sijmilar use, in which one part of the fastening is placed inside the stocking and the other outside, the stocking being secured between them.

The purpose of my invention is to simplify and cheapen the fastener and render the structure more compact.

Further purposes will appear in the specification and in the claims.

I have preferred to illustrate my invention by but one form, selecting a form which is practical, efficient and inexpensive and which at the same time well illustrates the principles of my invention.

Figures 1 and 2- are front elevations of the catch, the outside, perforated, encircling or gripping member, showing the parts in different positions.

Figs. 3 and 4 are a side elevation and a central, longitudinal section with the perforated member in position about the button.

In the drawings similar numerals indicate like parts. My garter clasp comprises generally two members, a button or rear member and a perforated inclosing or encircling front member, each carried by a depending garter strap or loop.

The button 15, having head 15 and neck 15 is supported upon a plate 16, whose lower edge 17 rests in the bend 18 of a loop 19 which is passed at its middle portion about the suspending bar 20 and extends downwardly at21 to the bend 18 and thence upwardly at 22 to some point above the fastener, here in proximity to the suspending loop. aperture 23 in the loop portion 22, so as to project from the strap formed and be in position for engagement by the catch.

7 The front member includes a movable catch 24:, extending through the two parts of a fabric loop forming a part of the loop 19 and extending downwardly at 25 and upwardly at 26 to a point above the fastener, here approximately to the supporting bar 20. The movable catch (operating) part 2% passes through both sides :25 and-26 and is secured therein by a collar 27 which is cemented or otherwise secured about the lower edge 28 of the catch. The catch is provided with one or more, here two projections 29 connected with the catch by necks 30 and is held in position at the front and protected against actuation through improper engagement with the clothing here by a front plate 31. This has notches 32 for reception of the necks 30. The intermediate rim sections 33 restrict the passagefor the necks 30 with the result that these neck portions snap into the grooves or depressions 32 and are retained in these positions at both ends of the movement corresponding to the open and closed position of the fastener.

The front protecting plate 31 is secured in position by tangs 34 which are passed through the openings 35 of a retaining washer or plate 36, and are clenched within the recesses 37. In the construction shown the tangsare extended through but one of the fabric thicknesses, going through 25 only.

The catch 24L, cap 31 and washer 35 are all provided with oval openings of size and shape adapted to permit the passage of the oval head 15 of the button. Of these the only one in which the size and shape of the opening is of practical importance is the in Fig. 1. V The catch is then turned, in a counterclockwise direction as shown, to the position seen in Fig. 2, the sides of the oval opening of the catch fitting the neck of the button and retaining the parts in the position shown in Fig. 4. In this figure the fabric has been omitted for clearness.

It will be evident that the front fabric length of the rear loop, bywhich the button support 16 is covered, forms a resilient backing for the stocking when clasped and that both thicknesses of the fabric forming the front loops afford resilience to the catch, effective to permit the catch to turn from one position of notch engagement to the other and retaining it in each of its posi,

tions. Thus advantage is taken iofthe front loop at the same time that. the catch is passed completely through it, giving a compactness of catch structure not otherwise attainable and considerably reducing the thickness of the device, as compared, for

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 V 1. In a garment clasp, an oval button, a flat support therefor, a rear fabric loop about the support, a front fabric loop, a
