PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES GOLDTHWAIT, OF SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOT-BLACKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,336, dated November 8, 1881.
Application filed March 19, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GOLDTHWAIT, of South Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Apparatus for Blacking and Polishing Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. r
My invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of a box or case and devices connected therewith, whereby provision is made for carrying a box of blacking, a brush for applying the same, and a polishingbrush, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top View of the box or case, partly broken away, with the polishing-brush removed. Fi g. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, with the polishing-brush in place in the box or case.
A represents a polishing-brush of the ordinary construction and form. It may be pro vided with a handle, a, or not, as may be preferred.
B represents a box or case, of elliptical or other suitable form corresponding with the shapeof the brush, and of a depth considerably greater than the length of the bristleson the brush A. On two opposite sides of the interior of the box or case B are two abutments, b, against which rests a bar, 0, thus dividing the lower part of the box into two semi-elliptical compartments, d (1 In the compartment dis a circular box of blacking, E, which rests on the bottom of the case B, and is held steadily in place by bearing against the bar 0 on one side, and by a packingyf, of cork or other suitable material, on the other side, and between it and the end of the casing. The compartment 01 is provided with a removable cover consisting of a semi-elliptical plate, Gr, provided with a ring, g, or other device for. lifting it. This plate or cover lies flat on the top of the blacking-box E and forms a cover for the same, and is held in place by the abutments A.
Forapplying the blackingI prefer a longhandled brush, H, such as is used for paint or paste. The handle of this brush may be fiat, or it may be a round handle with aflat surface formed onit by cutting away a portion, as
. shown.
When theapparatus is not in use the cover G is placed over the blacking-box E,thebrush H lies with its handle on the top of the cover G, and its brush portion in the compartment 02 and the polishing-brush A is inserted in the a case B so that its bristles bear on the brush H sufficiently to hold it in place, while the back of said brush A fits in the top of thecase B and forms acover for the same, and is held in place therein by a pin or stud, 1', at one end and a screw, J, at the other end.
The screw J may be a thumb-screw, so that it may be readily removed and replaced without a screw-driver.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The blacking-box case B, having on opposite sides the abutments b b, the box-compartment d, with flat cover G, the bar 0, between said compartment and abutments, the apartment 6?, adapted to receive the brush while its handle rests on the cover G, and an
