CLEANER AND POLISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed March 23, 1906. Serial No. 307,716.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. M. HAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cleaner and Polisher, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cleaning and polishing devices; and its object is to provide a device of this character which is of very simple construction and which can be used for polishing or cleaning surfaces of different material, the cleaning-head being so connected to the handle as to enable it to be used in polishing or cleaning angular portions of the surface.
The invention consists of a head having one or more shoes connected to it and to which polishing or cleaning material is adapted to be connected in any suitable manner. A. handle is fastened to the head and is overlapped by one of the shoes, so that said shoe can be moved against any outstanding surface or projection without being interfered with by the handle, the projecting portion of the shoe also protecting from the handle the outstanding surfaces upon the object being cleaned.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a head preferably rectangular in form and having sockets 2 in opposite sides to receive inwardlyextending alining lugs 3, formed with a yoke 4, which terminates in a handle 5. This yoke is preferably constructed of resilient material and may or may not be extensible. The head 1 is mounted upon a shoe 6, which is also preferably rectangular in form and has its edges beveled. This shoe extends beyond the sides of the yoke 4, so that the edges thereof can be brought into contact with an angular shoulder upon a surface to be cleaned without resulting in injury to said shoulder \for the. purpose of binding the tongue in j or, in fact, any material by the yoke. The shoe 6 is preferably formed detachable from the head, as shown in the drawings. The detachable connection may be made in any preferred manner; but the head 1 is preferably formed with a dovetailed groove 7 to receive a corresponding tongue 8, located upon the shoe. This tongue can fit within the head sufficiently tight to prevent its accidental displacement during the use of the device, or, if preferred, a set-screw 9 may be arranged within the head groove 7.
Instead of providing the head with a single in Figs. 1 and 2, the same may have shoes 10 and 11 upon its lower and up per faces, respectively, one of said shoes extending beyond the ends of the head 12 and beyond the ends of the yoke 13 which engages the head. These detachable shoes can be secured in place in any preferred manner, as by means of set-screws 14.
It will be seen that where shoes are mounted in this manner the same can be brought into contact with a shoulder on a surface to be cleaned without resulting in scratching or other injuries to the shoulder by the yokes 4 and 13. A cloth, sandpaper, suitable for polishing shoe, as shown or cleaning surfaces can be connected to the shoes in any preferred manner, and by sliding the device said surface all portions ated upon.
WVhat is claimed is- 1. The combination with a head having dovetailed grooves therein; of a yoke embracing the head and pivotally connected to opposite portions thereof, a handle upon the yoke, a shoe upon one face of the head and extendin beyond the adjoining faces of the head and beyond those ortions of the yoke embracing the head, a s me upon one face of the head and parallel with the first-mentioned shoe, opposite edges of the last-men tioned shoe extending beyond the adjoining faces of the head, dovetailed extensions upon the shoes and within the grooves in the head, and independent means for securing said extensions within the grooves.
2. The combination with a head having a groove therein; of a yoke embracing the head and pivotally connected to opposite iportions thereof, a handle upon the yoke,
backward and forward over thereof can be oper- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have he reto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
