IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFEFSCOUR'NG MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 179,365, dated J 11110 27, 1876; application filed April 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'ROSWELL G. SPAULD- ING, of Jonesville, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved (Jleaning-Board for Cutlery, of which the following is a specification Heretofore, in cleaning and polishing tablecutlery with pulverized bath-brick and other abrasive substances, it has been customary to use a wooden board upon which to rest the utensil to be polished, by rubbing it with a cork or a rag charged with the polishingpowder, by which the surface of the board would soon become Worn into unsightly ridges, and the device would be very untidy by holding much dust and powder.
The object of my invention is to provide a polishing-board with a hard, smooth surface which cannot be abraded by the polishing material, and to which it will not adhere. To this end I prefer to use a sheet of thick glass as the surface of the board, secured thereto, ashereinafter described, although slate, or any other hard material, can be used in place of glass for that purpose.

In the drawing, A represents a board, to
both sides and one end of which flange-pieces B are nailed, and across which, near one end, is a partition, B, making at that end a receptacle for the bath-brick, or other polishing material used, polishing-corks, 850. Under the open end is a ledge, B to raise that end, to prevent the polishing material lying loose on the board from falling off. 0 is a sheet of double-thick glass, laid on that part of the board on which the polishing is done, and is secured in place by rabbeting it into the sides B before nailing the latter onto the board A, the glass being out a little Wider than the lat ter for that purpose.
What i claim as my invention is 1. In a board for cleaning cutlery, the polishing-surface consisting of a sheet of glass, substantially as set forth.
2. The board for cleaning cutlery described, consisting of the board A, flanges B, partition 13, ledge B and glass 0, constructed, ar-
ranged, and combined substantially as described and shown.
