si ar FRANK HENRY JVIAYHOOD, OF CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA.
BRUSH.
Application filed April 11, 1922. Serial No. 551,668.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, FRANK HENRY MAY- rroon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city of Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes and more particularly to tooth brushes and the like used for toilet and hospital purposes, and the objects of the invention are to substitute for the ordinary bristles at present used a non-resistant plug of rubber or similar material having a renewable surface of pile towelling or otherwise at the point of contact.
Further objects are generally to improve and simplify the construction and to provide a practical and sanitary substitute of the character described for brush bristles.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter de scribed in detail in the accompanying speci fication and drawings.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of atooth brush with plug inserted therein.
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section.
Figure 3 is a top plan view with plug removed.
Figure lis an enlarged cross section.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the retaining ring detached.
In the drawings:
A represents a tooth brush comprising a frame 10 and a handle 11. Instead of the bristles usually associated with the frame 10, 1 provide a substitute in the form of a rubber plug 12 set into the frame 10 of the brush handle 11 removable by the pressure of the hands only. The plug being co1npressed when inserted is maintained in the recessed frame -by its own power of expansion. 13 is a renewable cover for the plug 12 of any suitable material designed to form a contact surface for said plug and here shown as of pile or towelling. This renewable surface 13 is maintained in place by means of a band or ring 14: adapted to fit upon the frame 10 at the base of the plug 12. The band or ring 14 is designed to lit at one end into a socket 15 on the frame 10 and is practically cylindrical in form with a concaved groove 16 therein provided with or without retaining means 16 as here shown in the shape of teeth so that on being moved backwards the surface or cover 13 can be inserted beside the band to be held by said concave groove while the other end of the surface 13 is held securely by the end 17 of the band 14 adapted to snap into the groove 18 in the frame 10. It will thus be seen that the band 14 is hingedly mounted at one end of the frame 10 and adapted to move accordingly while at the other end when in closed position it is adapted to lock with the end of the frame thereby form ing in combination with the concave sides 19 of the frame 10 adequate security for retaining the renewal surface 13 in position.
From the foregoing, the operation of my device in the several forms shown will be readily understood and appreciated, the es sential features of which are the elastic member 12 held in position by its own expansion in the recessed frame handle of a brush in combination with a renewable surface for said elastic plug held in position by an operatively mounted band or otherwise designed in co-operation with the plug member to hold or release the renewable surface as may be required.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
hat I claim as my invention is:
In a device of the character described, a
frame, a handle formed integral therewith, a recess formed in the frame, a plug of resilient material and larger than the recess adapted to be fitted thereinto and designed to be held therein by its oWn expansion, a removable cover forming a contact surface for the plug, and means for holding the cover in place comprising a rigid band member adapted to embrace the frame, and retaining means formed on said band adapted to engage With said cover.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK HENRY MAYHOOD. Witnesses LEWIS FREDERICK MAYHOeD, J OHN HARRY SEDMAN.
