Description

COLLAR Filed Nov. 22. 1924 INVENTOR MARC M/m A ORNEY Patented Mar. 22, 1927.
E STATES MARCUS KAl-IN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COLLAR.
Application filed November 22, 1924.
This invention relates to starched, ironed detachable collars.
For the most part, collars of this type' are attached to a short band through the medium of two collar buttons or studs, the back collar button and the front collar button, which cooperate with three button holes, one in the rear of the collar and one in each of the front tabs. Some wearers of collars, however, are greatly annoyed by the rear collar button pressing, as it does, upon the spine. There have, heretofore, been some attempts to do away with the back collar button, some wearers of collars even going to the extent of omitting all attachment for the rear of the collar.
The object of the present invention is to make possible,-without materially adding to the cost of such a collar, for its secure attachment to a shirt band at the back either with the use of a back collar button or without the use of a back collar button, to provide for the ironing of the collar in mangles without the danger of mutilation and, at the same time, leave the finished collar substantially equally satisfactory both for the user of the back collar button and for the nonuser of the back collar button.
In carrying out this object, I contemplate the provision in the back portion of the collar of an upstanding tab formed from the body material of the collar itself, involving all plies thereof, but not increasing the thickness of the back portion of the collar and within its own confines providing the usual rear button hole for the back collar button.
It is still a further object of my invention so to coordinate the back button hole and a securing tab in the back of the collar adapted to tuck up into the usual pocket formed on the shirt band, as to make impossible a cooperative weakening of the collar between these two provisions, namely, the tab and the back button hole. To this end, I terminate the slot, which forms the back tab, materially below the locality of the back button hole preferably mid-way between the line of the back button hole and the bottom edge of the collar.
The above will better be understood by reference to the illustrative embodiment of my invention described in the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawings which drawings form a part of the specification. It is to this illus- Serial No. 751,523.
trative embodiment that the claim; is directed for purposes of illustration and not limitation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a'perspect-ive view of a collar of the turned down typo embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of a shirt of commercial construction providing a rear pocket in the neckband;
Figure 3 is an enlarged rear elevation partly in section, showing the coordination of the back button hole and securing tab; and
Figure 4 is a cross section through the rear part of a collar attached in accordance with my invention to the neck band of a shirt.
A collar A, preferably of launderable textile fabric of the type adapted to be starched stiff and ironed in commercial laundries, may, as to its exposed characteristics and general construction, be as is usual in the trade. My invention appertains particularly to the method and means for attaching the rear of the collar to the neckband 0f the shirt. The collar has the usual front tabs 1 and 2, providing the front button holes 3 and 4, adapted to cooperate with the front collar button 5. At the rear, however, a curved slot 6, preferably of circular arcuate configuration, is formed through the entire wall 7 with its edges provided with button hole stitching or any suitable re-inforcing stitching 8. The shape and positioning of this slot is important. It is desirable that the vertical curvature of the slot be gentle relatively to its circumferential extent. That indicated in the drawing is preferable. It is also most desirable that the terminal ends 9 and 10 of this slot be carefully positioned. This slot 6 forms, in the material of the collar, a tab a adapted to be tucked up into the pocket formed by the loose ply b of the shirt neck band B in which ply the back button hole 0 is located.
The back button hole for the collar A is formed centrally and symmetrically in the tab (6 of my collar construction, preferably about mid-way between the top of the tab 12 and the bottom locality of the slot ends 9 and 10 which is indicated by the dot and dash line 13 in Figure 3. It is also preferable that this tab at be located so that the terminals 9 and 10 of the slot 6 are about mid-way between the line of the button hole 13 and the bottom terminal edge 16 of the collar. When the collar is attached either through the medium of the button hole 15 or through the medium of the tab at a bending tendency upon the body material of the collar in the neighborhood of the tab exists. In my construction, the button hole 15, being located well up above the location of the terminal ends of the slot (1', provides a tab of maximum strength. In fact, the button hole constitutes no Weakness therein, but merely a ready means of attaching for those users who desire the use of a back collar button.
The incline in shape of the slot forming the tab is also such that even though the tab a be bent out somewhat from the body of the collar, the passing of the collar through the mangle will automatically cause the tab to assume the same plane as the body of the collar and not tend to be turned off or folded down on itself.
hat I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters l. atent is:
A collar of the stiff launderable variety,
having its rear middle portion provided with a symmetrically curved slot, upwardly extending from and to symmetrically positioned terminals near, but materially separated from the bottom edge of the collar, whereby an attaching tab adapted automatically to adjust itself within the natural planes of the collar body, upon ironing, is provided Without any tendency for said tab to be torn off or folded over on itself; said tab also being provided with a collar button-hole extending substantially parallel to the bottom edge of said collar, located a material distance above the locality of said terminals of said slot, whereby said tab is freed from the weakening effect of said collar-button-hole when said tab, as an entirety, is bent out from the body of the collar.
In, Witnesswhereof, I have Signed my name to this specification this 15th day of Sept, 1924.
MARCUS KAHN.
