in the drawings, reference numeral 1 indicates a shlrt that buttons in front and has the collar band 2 thereon. This collar band ,is preferably made of two or more'layers of material, which layers are stitched together, preferably along the bottom edge thereof. At 3 the front layer is provided with a buttonhole therethrough, which hole does not go through the back layers of the collar band. The band is not stitched along the edge around the buttonhole but is stitched back of or above the button hole instead so that at the edge around this buttonhole the layers are left unstitched for a short distance and the layers can be separated to permitthe insertion of a collar button between the layers. In this way, a small pocket is formed in the collar band which has the buttonhole in the front thereof and is closed at the back. When the collar button is inserted in the buttonhole, the

come into contact with the neck of the person who wears the shirt.

It is a well known fact that shirts are heavily starched in the laundry so that the ,loose'layers ofthe material thereof are fastened more or, less firmly together by the ironing: and it is frequently difficult to separate them. To avoid this difliculty and make it easier to separate the layers of the material at the buttonholes, I provide an extension 4 integral with the outer layer.

When the shirt is laundried and ironed, this extension will slightly overlap the bosom of the shirt and can be easily raised therefrom, and when it is once separated it can be used as a handle to pull apart the layers of the collar band so as to expose the buttonhole which goes through the outer layer only and makes the buttonhole accessible from both the front and the rear. This operation is done without'disturbing the rest of the shirt of interfering with its finish.

The extension 4 is small and so placed thatit willbe easily ironed down and will not be torn in'the ironing and is yet avail-- able for lthe opening of the buttonhole when needed as above described.

I claim:

A'collar band for a shirt, said band havlng two layers of material therein sewed together along one edge, a button hole through one of said layers, an extension to the said layer below the hole,' said extension extending below the band, the said layers being left unsewed between the extension and the hole but being sewed together above and at one side of the hole leaving a pocket therein between the layers that opens at the bottom and on the adjacent side, said pocket being closed on the other two sides, said extension overlapping the upper edge of the shirt bosom.
