UNITED STATES,
1,500,540- PATENT o FicE.
GEORG ERNE, 0F KREUZLINGEN, SWITZERLAND.-
S USPE'NDER FOR STOCKINGS AND SOCKS.
Application filed May 14; 1925, Serial No. 30,206, and. in Switzerland May 22, 1924.
Various types of suspenders for stockings and socks are known with which the stockings or the socks are gripped at their edge between a fiat wedge shaped element and a correspondingly shaped clamping piece. In most cases the latter is fastened to a tension strap, but it is also known to connect the clamping piece by means of a neck-shaped extension to the wedge shaped element and to fasten only the latter to the tension strap.
When the stocking or the sock is placed over the clamping piece situated on the inner side of the stocking the latter forms a cover which has to be indented by means of the wedge situatedon the outer side of the stocking in order to be able to insert the Wedge in the clamping piece" for the purpose of holding the stocking; it is diiiicuit to insert the clamping piece according to the touch and the stocliing may easily be injured by a careless movement of the clamping piece towards the wedge.
This drawback is overcome with the suspender according to the present invention with which the flat wedge shaped piece in tended for the inner side of the stocking is fastened to a tension strap and is rounded at its longitudinal edges diverging in the downward direction and the clampin piece can be pushed over the wedge shaped part rom the outer side of the stocking and in the direction oi tension of the latter.
With the suspender simplicity in handling is combined with the greatest care of the stocking. The fiat wedge element affords a smooth supporting face to the inner side of the stocking on which the latter can easily be tensioned and clamped in the tensioned state. The clamping piece can conveniently be pushed over the wedge shaped element and without having to fear that the tensioned stocking is injured. The rounding ot the longitudinal edges of the preferably and comparatively thick wedge shaped element does away with the cutting action on the stocking which otherwise connected with the clamping action.
A constructional example of the subject.
matter of the present invention is illustrated on the'accoinpanying drawings, in which: Figs. 1 and 2 show thesuspender in use in a front and in a side View,
Fig. 3 shows on an enlarged scale a horizontal section through the Wedge shaped eleme t and the clamping piece and Fig. 4 shows the suspender when it'is not used.
V In the drawings 1 denotes the wedge shaped element the upper end of which is shaped to form aneye 2 for the reception of a rubber strap 3 serving to fix the suspender to a garment. The wedge shaped element consists of a fiat piece made of artificial horn. celluloid, metal or the like and its longitudinal edges 4 diverging inxthe downward direction are rounded. On this wedge.
shaped element 1 the clamping piece 5 formin a slide can be placed so that its bent edges 5' grip over the edges of the element 1. The clamping piece 5 is attached to the Wedge shaped element 1 by means of a string 6 threaded through the latter so that the piece 5 cannot get lost; the ends of the string 6 are connected to lateral eyes 5 of the claini iwing piece 5.
The edge of the stocking S whichhas to he held bythe suspender is placed between the clamping piece-5 and the wedge shaped element 1. Thereupon the clamping piece 5 is pressed over the element 1 and is displaced in the downward direction along the longitudinal edges oi": the element 1 as indicated by the arrow in Fig. l. Thereby the edge of the stocking is held fast by clamping ae tion between the parts 1 and 5; The pull on the stocking occurring in the direction of the arrow etiects an increase of the clamping action securing the stocking to the sus' pender.
I claim:
A suspender for stockings and socks comprising in combination, a strap, a flat piece connected to said strap and having diverging rounded longitudinal edges extending in the downward direction and adapted to be placed on the 'nner side of the stocking, a clamping piece having bent edges adapted to cooperate with'said rounded longitudinal.
edges when said clamping piece is slid over said flat piece on the outer side or" the stocking and in the'direction of the pull of the latter, laterally arranged eyes on. said clamping piece, and a string passing through said eyes and connecting said clamping piece to said flat piece. I
In testimony whereofl'l have signed my name to this specification.
stone sans.
