UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR W. CARLSON AND CLAUDE L. COLE, OF ALEXANDRIA, MINNESOTA.
LINGERIE CLASP.
Application filed September The present invention relates to improvements in lingerie clasps and has reference more particularly to a device which may be readily secured on the inner face of the shoulder portion of a dress, and which will retain the trap of lingerie or other undergarments on the shoulders of the wearer and concealed underneath the dress.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a lingerie clasp of the above mentioned character that will prevent the shoulder strap of the under garment from slipping off of the shoulders causing inconvenience and annoyance to the wearer, whereby such objections will be' overcome.
Still a further object is to provide a lingerie clasp of the above mentioned character that can be readily and easily attached or detached without any difiiculty, the same being further simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention proceeds and when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings; forming a part of this application and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lingerie clasps embodying our invention, showing the manner in which the same supports the lingerie shoulder strap.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the shoulder portion of a dress, showing the manner in which our improved lingerie clasp is attached to the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the lingerie clasp per se.
Figure 4 is an edge elevation thereof.
Figure 5 is a sectional view, taken substantially upon the line 55 of Figure 3, showing the manner in which the shoulder strap engaging member is attached to the safety pin, and
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing a modification of the lingerie clasp.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 1 designates generally the strap receiving member, the same being formed from a 27, 1928. Serial No. 308,818.
single piece of material, such as celluloid or thin metal. The strip of material is bent back upon itself to form upper and lower bars 2 and 3 respectively, the lower bar being of greater length than the upper bar. The free end of the upper bar is bent slightly upwardly to form a lip 4, to facilitate the ready and easy insertion or removal of one or more shoulder straps between the upper and lower bars of the unit 1.
The lingerie clasp further includes the provlsion of a safety pin 5, for clamping the clasp to the shoulder portion of a dress or outer garment.
Thepicrcing ledge portion 6 of the safety pin 5 is adapted to extend through the seam B on the inner side of the shoulder portion of the dress A. The back 7 of the safety pin has its intermediate portion so bent as to provide an offset portion 8 as clearly shown in Figure 3 and the purpose thereof will be presently described.
The attaching means between the strap holder 1 and the safety pin 5 is shown generally at 9 and the same comprises a single strip of spring metal that is bent back upon itself to form the upper and lower arms 10 and 11 and the intermediate loop 12. The looped portion 12 extends around the offset portion 8, of the safety pin 5, while the arms 10 and 11 embrace the inner end of the longer bar 3 of the shoulder strap holder unit 1. Opposed prongs 13 and 14 are associated with the intermediate portions of the arms 10 and 11 for bighting engagement with the inner end portion of the lower bar 3, whereby to positively secure the shoulder strap holder unit 1 to the attaching member 9 and the looped portion 12 cooperates with the offset portion 8 of the safety pin so as to provide a pivotal connection between the holder 1 and the safety pin.
In use, the lingerie clasp is attached to the seam portion of the underside of the shoulder portion of the dress, with the hooked end of the holder 1 extending in an opposite direction and the lingerie straps are then inserted between the upper and lower bars 2 and 3 of the holder unit 1. As the shoulder or lingerie straps have a tendency to normally work downwardly off of the shoulders so that the straps will be retained by the hooked end portion of the holder 1 in proper position beneath the shoulder portion of the dress or outer garment.
In Figure 6 there is shown a modification of the clasp wherein the strap receiving member has the inner end of the lower bar bent back upon itself to enclose the offset portion 8 of the safety pin as illustrated at 15. This will obviate the necessity of using a separate clip to attach the shoulder strap receiving member to the safety pin.
A lingerie clasp of the above mentioned character may be readily and easily attached or removed from a dress, and the same will, at all times be positive and efiicient in properly retaining the shoulder straps in position so as to prevcnt'any inconvenience being suffered by the wearer and furthermore the lingerie clasp will not cause any discomfort to the wearer.
The simplicity of our improved lingerie clasp enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost and yet be strong and durable.
While we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be reresorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat we claim is:
1. In a lingerie clasp of the class described, a strap receiving and retaining member comprising upper and lower bars connected at their outer ends, the lower bar being of greater length than the upper bar, a safety pin for attaching the clasp t0 the under side of the shoulder portion of an outer garment, and means for pivotally connecting the end of the lower bar to the back of the safety pin,
said means comprising a looped element carried by the inner end of the lower bar for disposition around the back of the safety pin.
2. In a lingerie clasp of the class described, a strap receiving and retaining member comprising upper and lower bars connected at their outer ends, the lower bar being of greater length than the upper bar, a safety pin for attaching the clasp to the under side of the shoulder portion of an outer garment, means for pivotally connecting the end of the lower bar to the back of the safety pin, said means comprising a looped element carried by the inner end of the lower bar for disposition around the back of the safety pin, said back of the safety pin being pro- \"lClG-(l with an offset portion to receive said looped portion.
3. In a lingerie clasp of the class described, a strap receiving and retaining member comprising upper and lower bars joined at their outer ends, the lower bar being of greater length than the upper bar, a safety pin for attaching the clasp to the under sideof the shoulder portion of an outer garment, means for connecting the holder to the back of the safety pin, said means comprising a strip of material bent back upon itself to provide upper and lower arms, and an intermediate loop for disposition around the back of the safety pin, the arms engaging the upper and bottom faces of the inner end portion of the bottom bar and being attached thereto.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
