Thisinvention relates to certain improvements in that class of garment bags which are-designedto be tightly closed so asV to exclude moths.
I The objects of the present invention are to provide an improved form of vclosure for bags for this purpose, which is adapted to hold the mouth of the bag distended for filling purposes and the members of which are constructed to be conveniently and t1ghtly locked together so that the possibility ot the entra-nce of moths will be prevented.
l accomplish these objects by the means hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of one of the closure members.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, at line 3-3 of Fig. 1, showing the closure members in open position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View at line 4-4 ol Fig. 1. a
Figs. 5 and 6 are detail side and top views of one of the locking clasps.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view, at line 33 of. Fig. l, showing the closure members in closed position.
As shown in the drawing, a bag 10 is provided', which is of any suitable sheet material, opposite portions of which, at the mouth, are clamped between an outer plate 12 and an inner plate 13 at one side and between an outer plate 14 and an inner plate 15 at the opposite side, leaving an equal portion of the material between each of the adjacent ends. Said plates are all formed from Hat sheet metal. The outer plate 12 is bent at right angles at its top, to form a top portion 12DL and at right angles again, or reversely, to form an edge flange 12h which depends from the top portion, thereby forming a groove or recess which extends for the entire length of said plate. End flanges 12c arealso formed thereon, which meet the inner sides of the portions 12a and 12b so as to close the ends of said groove. The outer late 14 is bent at right angles at its top to orm a top flange 14a and an end flange 14h, the width thereof being such that the top portion of the plate 14 may be fitted into the groove formed in the top portion of plate 12, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7. A clasp 16 is connected by a hinge 17 to each end of the plate 12, each clasp being of angular construction, so that it may be swung about the end flanges 12 against theL outer side ot the plate `14.so as to enclose the ends of said. plates. A spring catch 1S is provided on plate 14 at each end for hold-` ing each clasp in this position, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, 5 and 6.
The inner plate 13 is provided with a ledge 20, to which several ringsv 21 are attached for the purpose of providing means for supporting clothing yokes and a spreader hook 22 is attached to the plate 13 at each end, said hooks being arranged to be engaged with the opposite plate 15 to hold the bag distended, as shown in Fig. 3.
lVit-h the above described construction, when the bag is to beclosed, the hooks 22 are disconnected and folded beneath the plate 13, a bracket 23 being provided to support the free end of each hook, as shown in Fig. 2. The bag portions between the ends of the closure members are then folded inward and the closure members are brought together until the edges of the flanges of plate 14 engage the inner sides of the plate 13, and then the former is moved sidewise or upward, so that its top portion 14a is seated within the groove of plate 12. The clasps 16 are then swung into engagement with the plate 14 at each end and locked in this position by the spring catches 18, thereby enclosing the ends of the plates and securely holding them in closed posit-ion.
I claim:
l. In a garment bag, a pair of closure members, each comprising an elongated metal plate, means for securing opposite portions of the bag at its mouth to said plates, one of said plates having a reversely extending top portion at one side thereof forming a recess extending throughout its length and the other plate having its top portion arranged to be fitted into said recess to close the bag tightly and means for locking said members in closed position.
2. In a garment bag, a pair of closure members, each comprising an elongated metal plate, means for securing opposite portions of the bag at its mouth to said plates, one of said plates having its top portion extended laterally and reversely to form a groove which extends for the length thereof and having means to close the ends of said groove, and the other plate having a laterally extending top portion adapted to be fitted in said groove.
3. In a. garment bag, a pair of closure members, each comprising an elongated metal plate, means for securing opposite portions of the bag at its month to said plates, one of said plates having a reversely bent portion at its top edge forming a groove Whieh extends for the length thereof and the other plate having its top portion arranged to be fitted into said groove, and
I a clasp on one of said plates arranged to be moved to enclose the ends of said plates and hold them in engaged posit-ion.
1. In a garment bag-I a pair of transverse closure members, each comprising an elon-
