This invention relates to a garment bag and aims to im rove certain of the structural features of the ag to produce an article that is more durable and convenient for use.

A particular object of the invention is the provision of an improved top construction in which the top of the bag is reinforced by metal parts and in which a swiveled hook is attached to the metal parts to form an efli cientand convenient arrangement for suspending the bag.

While preferred embodiments have been disclosed for purposes of illustration, it should be understood that various changes may be made in the structure without departin from the spirit and scope of'the invention as ereinafter set forth and claimed.

Referring to the drawings more particularly, the bag comprises a box-like body 10, which may be formed of paper, fabric, or other suitable material, and is closed all around except for the longitudinal slit 11. A flap 12 is attached along each edge of the slit, each flap being provided with a stiffening insert as at 13. These flaps are adapted to make a dust-proof closure for the bag by be ing folded together to the position of Fig. 6 and then being secured by the hooks 14 after the manner of Fig, 1.

An inside stiffening plate 15, formed of metal. extends across the entire width of the top of the bag and helps to hold it in fully extended shape when it is suspended. A depressed channel 16 extends across the middle part of plate 15, and a pair of L-shaped slots 17 are cut into the plate in communication with the ends of channel 16. The inward ends of slots 17 located slightly toward one end of channel 16, form stops cooperating with end members of a bail 23, (later referred to) to prevent swinging of the bail in one direction, as also later explained. A plurality of points 18 are punched upwardly from the body of plate 15 along each side of the channel 16.

An outside plate 19 is formed with a plurality of slots 20 for co-operation with the points 18 and with a channel 21 pressed upwardly along the center line of the plate 19, this channel being relatively deep at its middle and tapering ofi' toward its ends. An arcuate slot 22 is cut into one side of the channel 21 at its center. A bail member 23 is formed with inwardly projecting ends 24 and with bends 25 along its lower rail to maintain the hooks of garment hangers in spaced relation.

In assembling the parts the ends 24 of bail 23 are inserted into the slots 17 from the bottom side of plate 15 and the bail is then moved into a position with the ends 24 seating in channel 16 as shown in Fig. 2. The hook 26 which carries a semi-globular enlargement 27 at its lower end, is threaded through the slot 22 from the under side of plate 19. The innor plate 15 is then placed on the inside of the bag in contact with its top side, and then points 18 are pushed through the material of the bag. Next the outside plate 19 is positioned over the top of the bag with the slots 20 engaging the points 18, the points being then bent over to hold the parts in place as will be clear from Figs. 1 and 4. Bail 23 is free to swing in one direction that is toward the narrow closure-side thereof, for folding of the bail flat against plate 15 when the bag is collapsed; but the inner ends of slots 17, cooperating with the end members of the bail, act as stops to prevent the bail swinging in the other direction, or away from the bagopening. Thus when a garment is inserted, on its hanger, and the hanger-hook is moved towardthe bail, the bail is held practically rigidly, and cannot swing backward so as to interfere with the easy location of the hook upon it.

Fig. 7 illustrates a modified structure for the top assembly. In using this arrange ment the inside plate 15 can be made of heavy cardboard or similar material. The inside metal plate 28 is relatively small and has a channel 29 formed therein as well as points 30 similar to the points 18. The outside plate is similar to that already described, and after the bail 23 has been hooked over the plate 28 with its ends 24 in the channel 29, the parts are assembled in the manner above set forth;

In either structure the inside stifl'ening plate is coextensive with the top of the bag, and the two metallic plates are clamped together to hold the garment-carrying bail and the outside hook in place. The slot 22 permits the hook to swing down flat against the top of the ba to the position of Fig. 4, and the bail also f olds flat, so that theseparts do not interfere with the folding of the bag.

The swiveled connection of the hook 26 with the bag makes it easier to pivot the bag when it is desired to gain access thereto.

I claim:

1. A garment bag comprising a box-like body having a vertical opening, a top plate secured to the outside of the body, a supporting hook cooperating directly-coengaging means on an end of said hook and intermediate the ends of said top plate for swivelling said hook to said top plate and also for folding said hook into substantially parallel relation to the plane of said top plate.

2. A garment bag comprising a box-like body, a stiffening plate on the inside of the top of the body a channel in the stiffening plate, a bail engaged in the channel, an outside plate positioned on the top, a channel pressed into said plate, a transverse slot in the channel, a hook passing through the slot and having an enlargement in the channel whereby the hook has a swivel and folding connection with the outside plate, and means for holding the plates in clamping relation to the top.

3. A garment bag comprising a top, a metallic stiffening plate coextensive with the top, a channel pressedinto the stiffening plate, a bail having inwardly turned ends, the

4. A garment bag comprising a top, a

vmetallic stifi'ening plate coextensive with the top, a channel pressed into the stiffening plate, a bail having inwardly turned ends, the stiffening plate having a pair of L-shaped slots leading to the channel to permit engaging the ends of the bail in the channel, the ends of said slots forming stops preventing swinging of the bail beyond vertical position in one direction and permitting it to swing in the other directions to a flat, folded position against the stiffening plate, an outside plate positioned on the top, a channel pressed into the top, a slot in one side of the channel, a hook passing through the slot and having an enlargement in the channel, and points projecting from the stiffening plate through the top and engaging the outside plate to hold the plates in clamping relation to the top.

A garment bag comprising a top, a plate secured to said top, a channel pressed into said plate, a bail having inwardly turned ends, said plate being formed with a pair of L-shaped slots leading to the channel for permitting said ends of said bail to be engaged in said channel and means for supportlng said top.

6. ]n a garment bag having a closed top and an open side, the combination with a plate secured to said top and provided with a channel pressed into said plate, of a bail formed with inwardly turned ends, said plate being formed with a pair of L-shaped slots leading to said channel for permitting said ends of said bail to be engaged in said channel, the ends of said slots forming stops for cooperating with said bail ends to permit the bail to swing fiat against the plate in the direction toward said open side of the bag, and also to prevent the bail swinging beyond a position at approximately right angles to the plate in the opposite direction, and means for supporting said top.
