ALICE B. HOLT, OF GRAFTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
CLAMRATTACHMENT FR BEDS.
' Application led May 11,
ily removed from the bed and as Vreadily replaced on'the bed.
A further object of the invention is ther provision of an attachment of the character described which will take up but little space, will be inconspicuous and will not detract from the appearance of the bed, and which is thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from Vthe following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure1 is an elevation of the foot end of a bed equipped with an attachment embodying` the invention, l
Figure 2 is a slightly enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the foot end of the bed and through the attachment, the' view being taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing the attachment closed,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the attachment open and the bed clothing omitted, Y Y
Figure 4 is a fragmentary prospective view of the attachment alonekin closed position.
In carrying out the invention, I provide i a pair of cooerative clamping members or jaws A and respectively. The member A preferably is a flat strip of metal or other suitable material bent edgewise substantially into-U-shape to produce a web portion A1 and a pair of parallel arms A2. The member B also preferably is formed of a flat strip of metal or other suitable material bent edgewise substantially into U-shape to produce a web portion B1 and a pair of parallel arms B2. The web portions A1 and B1 of the clamping members preferably are equal in length and width and the effective length of the arms B2 also preferably is equal to i926. sei-iai No. 108,315.
the effective length of the arms A2.l However, t-he strip of material of which the member B is formed maybe longerthan the strip of metal of which the member A is formed so that the arms B2 may include portions at 3 which are offset laterally s of the remaining portions of the arms B2 intermediate the length of the arms B2, thus producing lateral pockets at t for a purpose to be presently stated.
- The extremities of corresponding arms A2 and B2 are hingedly connected by axially aligned pivot elements or pintles 5 so'that the members A and B may swing relatively to each other about the arial line of the pintles' 5 to and from Apositions to contact flatwise with each other. rllension springs 6y are disposed in the pockets 4 between the arms A2 of the member A and the laterally offset portions 3 of the member B, oneend of each of the springs 6 being attached, as at 7, to l* the associated offset portion 3 of the member Band the other end of that spring 6 being attached, as at 8, to the associa-ted arm A2 of the member A. The springs 6 function to hold the device closed or mother wordswlth the; members A and B flatwiseagainst each other; The ymembers A and Binay be opened against the action-of the springs 6 and may be maintained in opened positions through the agency of hooks 9 having' Shanks hingedly attached to the arms of one of thel members of the device, as at 10 to the arms B2,
and being detachably engageable with screw eyes 11 on the arms of the other member of the device, as the member A, the shanks of the hooks being sufficiently rigid and of suficient length to maintain the web portions of the members A and B apart a desirable distance when the hook members 9 are engaged with the screw eyes 11.
From' the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The arms B2 of the device are secured to the foot portion of a bed 12 so that the web portions of the members A and B will extend at right angles with the direction of length of the bed and will be substantially horizontal.. Also, the member B of the device is secured to the foot portion of the bed so that the upper edges of the web portions of the members A and B will be substantially level with the lower face of the members 13 of the bed when the device is closed. TWhen they device is attached to the bed 12 in the manner illusbei above the cross member 15 ofthe bed frame.l
However, it is obvious that the arms B2 of the member B ofthe device may be secured to the foot end of the bed spring` 16 on which a mattress 13 is supported b-y'any suitable known fastening means (not shown), it only g essential that the device be secured to the foot portion of a bed so that the web portions of the members of the device will be disposed below the plane of theupper snrface of the mattress of the bed. rThe bed covering 17 is disposed on the mattress 13 so that the end portion of the bed covering at the foot of the bed extends downwardly across' the adjacent end of the mattress between the web portions of the members A and B. The members A and B and particularly the'web vportions thereof will be actuated by the springs 6 to firmly grip the portion of the bed clothing that is disposed between the members A and B and the bed covering thus will be securely held against accidental displacement from position to cover the mattress at the foot'of thebed.
The web portions of the members A and B may be held apart by means of the hook members 9 and the screw eyes 11 against the action of the springs 6 when it is desired to withdraw the end portion of the bedv covering from position between the members A and B or when it is desired to insert portions of the bed covering between the web portions the foot end of the bed.
of the members` A and B. The device is simple in construction and'effective and reliable in use. t makes possible the use of relatively short bed covering since no portionr of the bed covering need be tucked underneath the mattress when the attachment is employed to prevent the bed covering from being pulled accidentally on the mattress from position to vcover the mattress at 0bviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms otherthan that which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and l therefore consider as my own. all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly tall within the sco-pe of the appended claim. i
A slamp of the character described com* prising a pair of substantiallyv U-shaped members, corresponding arms of said members being hingedly connected, the arms of one of said members having laterally offset portions, thus producing poclrets, and tension springs disposed in said pockets and connecting the offset portions of the arms of said one clamping member with the arms of the other clamping member, rigid hook members swinffingly attached to the arms of one of said clamping members, and Yscrew eyes carried by the arms ofthe other clamping member and adapted to be engaged by said hook members, said hook members being' of sufficient length to hold said clamping members in open position when said hook members are engaged with said screw eyes.
