M. K. LAMPING COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT Filed Dec. 18, 1922 ROMP. wmam 11W Patented May 19, 1925 UNITED MATHILD K. LAMPING, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT.
Application filed December 18, 1922. Serial No. 607,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHILD K. LAMIING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Undergarments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to combination undergarments. One object of the invention is to provide an improved garment of this character which is composed of two separate units, each unit being adapted to hang from the shoulders. By providing a two-piece garment in which each unit or piece is supported from the shoulder, the body will be left free for all muscular movements and the garment will be adapted for variable dimensions of chest and abdomen. The units are made to overlap at the front and back so that shrinkage of the material will not cause openings to be left at the front and back. Other objects and advantages will appear from the specification.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a garment embodying the invention. Fig. 2' is a rear view. Figs. 3 and 4 are front and rear views of one of the units. Fig. 5 is a rear view showing the flaps opened.
The invention is exemplified in a combination garment consisting of two units each of which comprises a leg portion 8, a body partion 9 extending upwardly from the leg portion and adapted to extend around one side of the body, a sleeve portion 10 and a shoulder portion 11. The body portion 9 of each unit is extended to lap the chest and abdomen, as at 12, and extends obliquely upward from the crotch to the shoulder portion 11. Each body portion 9 is extended at the back to form a flap or panel 13, the margin extending substantially straight and disposed so that the flaps or panels 13 will overlap the back. Each unit is also formed with a neck opening 1 1. If desired, a slit 15 may be provided at the front of each opening and a button 16 to fasten the margins of the slit so that each neck opening will be of suflicient size to permit the head to be passed through. As a result of this construction, each unit is suspended from both shoulders and will be held on the shoulders by the neck of the person. If desired, the crotch portion of each unit may be provided with a flap or lapel 17 and provided with buttons 18 to fasten into button-holes in the other unit and thus form a well secured closed crotch.
The margins of the units are usually reinforced, as well understood in the art. If desired, the back flap 13 may be reinforced, as at 20 and 21. Although it is usually not necessary to use securing means for the margins 12, it will be understood that buttons may be provided for them if desired.
The invention exemplifies a combination undergarment which is composed of separate units, each of which comprises leg and body portions supported from the shoulders. The unit may be more easily laundered than a one-piece combination garment. As a fur ther result of this construction, the units will remain in position to properly cover the body without restricting muscular move ments which is a desideratum in garments used during athletic exercises. Another characteristic is that the overlapping portions at the front and back are so extensive that shrinkage of the material will not result in any openings or any hindrance to muscular movement. Another inherent advantage is that the rear panels 13 can be folded outwardly to form an opening of maximum size. These portions are held closed and in overlapping relation by buttons 23 there being one button on each unit adapted to be secured in a button hole in the other.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the ap pended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A combination garment composed of two separate units, each unit comprising a body portion extending partly around the body and over a shoulder and a leg portion, the shoulder portion in each unit being extended to completely encircle the neck.
2. A combination garment composed of two separate units, each unit comprising a body portion extending partly around the body and over both shoulders and an arm opening and a leg portion, the shoulder portion in each unithaving a substantially complete neck opening therein, the front margins of each body portion extending diagonally from the shoulder adjacent the arm opening in the other unit to the crotch.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 12th day of De ember, 1922.
MATHILD K. LAMPING.
