Be it known that I, Ionn SAsmNr, a British subject, residing at Sto-ke Newington, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Tobacco Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

ThisV invention relates to tobacco pipes, cigar holders and the like of the kind in which the smoke is caused to pass through an annular chamber (formed around an eX- tension from the mouthpiece that passes through an enlarged cylindrical cavity in the stem) on its way to the mouthpiece and has for its object improvements whereby moisture is prevemed from passing between the mouthpiece and bowl of a pipe or holder and the socket part of the mouthpiece is strengthened.

Pipes as well as cigar and cigarette holders of the kind referred to, have been provided with a straight upwardly inclined bore extending between the mouthpiece and the upper part of the annular chamber at one end and between the bowl or holder and the upper part of the said annular chamber at the other end where the extension from the mouthpiece was provided with an enlarged part that was adapted to make an airtight joint between the said straight upwardly inclined bore at that end and the usual bore in the stem leading to the said bowl or holder. 'Ihe object of this construc-v tion is to cause moisture entering or dcposited in the annular chamber to fall to the bottom of .it and so leave a sufficient space above for the dry smoke to pass freely from the bowl or holder to the mouthpiece.

lVith pipes of this construction it is found that when the moisture that frequently accumulates in the bore of the mouthpiece is blown into the chamber formed between the said extension and the bore of the pipe stem it is caused to assume a more or less distorted globular form by reason of its surface tension and the fact that the said chamber is covered with the greasy oil of the tobacco.

If the smoker discharges this globule of moisture by blowing through the mouthpiece vigorously, it is shot to the opposite end of the chamber and through the bore in the enlarged end of the extension and thence into the pipe bowl or holder before gravity has time to cause the moisture to fall to 'the lower part of chamber so as to be trapped therein,

I have found that by providing the exy tension between the inner end of the mouthpiece and the enlarged end of said extension with a reduced part the surface tension of the moisture is alforded an opportunity of pulling the elongated drop of moisture into aform that more closely approximates the spherical and that the said drop on reaching the further end of the reduced part meets with a resist-ance to its forward movement that causes it to fall to the bottom of the chamber.

rIhe present invention further consists in providing the aforesaid extension with a long tubular coupling part adapted to eX- tend through the socket or push which is of reduced diameter into the mouthpiece so as to strengthen the push and so prevent its being broken off when the smoker knocks the ash out of his pipe.

I will now proceed to more particularly describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying drawing which shows a longitudinal section through a pipe embodying the present improvements.`

According to the construction shown, the extension a' has an enlarged end j adapted to abut against the end of the chamber 7c so as to form an airtight joint at that point and is provided with a tubular part f that eX- tends through the push al into the mouthpiece c. The shoulder ,7L is provided with a Y straight bore Z which extends from the upper sid-e of the said shoulder h to the screwthreaded end of the tubular part 7 where itjoins the bore of the mouthpiece. The enlarged end 7' of the extension z' is also provided with a straight bore m extending from its upper side to the reduced inner end a of the bore leading to the pipe bowl a.

In order to prevent the moisture that accumulates in the bore of the mouthpiece from being blown across the upper part of the chamber k in the form of an elongated drop to the bore m in the enlarged end y' and thence through the inner end n of the bore in the pipe stem into the bowl a, I provide the extension z with a reduced portion or neck o within which the surface tension of the moisture causes the drop to assume a more spherical form whose forward progress is hindered by the narrower space beyond the neck which causes said drop to fall to the lower part of the chamber 7C.

By making the upwardly ,inclined bores Straightleanng is facilitated and in Order that the mouth-piece may be inserted with the bores directed upwardly it is provided With a suitable merk.

l claim:

A tobacco pipe, consisting of e, part hav-v ing,` a stem lorined with a long` cylindrical cavity, in combination with a mouthpiece consisting of t body and an extension passthrongh said cavity and having` its exterior faces fully exposed to the walls: of seid cavity and Yformed with an enlarged free end portion, an enlarged portion adjacent to said body., short portions of smaller Cross-sectional size extending` toward each other from thel opposed faces of said enlarged portions, and a medial neel; of greatly reduced diameter connecting said short portions, the ends of which eonstitute abrupt end shoulders for said neolr, the said body9 extension and enlarged portions of the lettei being, formed with bores forming` communi-cation through the upper part of said cavity with then atmosphere, whereby any globules oi? tobacco oil and moisture on seid extension will move thereon to the neel: thereof and drop therefrom to the bottom et the Cavity and the smoke -will be drawn into the upper part of seid cavity and from the upper part of said eavtv.
