N. FRIEDMAN SMOKING PIPE Filed Feb. 18. 1926 INVENTOR Patented May 8, 1928.
UNITED STATES 1,669,045 PATENT OFFICE.
JTATHAN FRIEDMAN, O YONKER-S, NIE'W YORK.
suoxme rrra.
Application filed February 18, 1926. Serial R0. 89,110.
.of the pipe is enhanced and its cost of production materially reduced, without impairing its efiiciency.
A practical embodiment of my inventlon is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. -1 represents,-- the "smoking pipe in longitudinal vertical section.
Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section through the pipe bowl, taken in the plane of the line II-II of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 represents a detail top plan view of the front end portion of the pipe stem, the front end hollow plug and its absorbent tube being shown partly removed, in dotted lines.
The pipe bowl 1 has the bottom of its tobacco chamber 2 intersected by a transverse pipe stem receiving recess 3, which recess extends from the rear of the bowl nearly to but not through the frontof the bowl. This bowl may be made of any desired shape, 'material and size. f
The large hollow pipe stem 4 is removably held by friction in the transverse recess 3 and it has a wide slot 5 in its top side wall open through the front end of the stem, which slot forms a hole located in position to open communication between the tobacco chamber 2 and the interior of the'pipe stem 4. 4 I
The removable mouthpiece 6 has a reduced exterior front end portion 7 which is insorted into the rear end of the pipe stem 4. The front end of the bore 8 throu h the mouthpiecefi is enlarged, to remova ly receive the rear end of a small absorbent tube 9 which extends a distance toward the front end of the pipe stem 4; the said enlarged bore 8 forming an interior annular shoulder 10 for limiting the distance the tube can" be inserted into the mouthpiece.
The removable metal plug 11 for closing the front end of the pipe stem 4 has a 'two diameter skirt, the larger portion 12' of which loosely fits within the bore of the stem and the smaller portion 13 of which is spaced from the inner walls of the stem. The front end of a removable absorbent tube 14 is inserted into the hollow plug 11, which tube extends rearwardly a distance toward the mouthpiece 6. This tube 14. surrounds the tube 9 and is spaced therefrom and from the inner wall of the pipe stem to form a tortuous passage which leads first rearward: ly from the tobacco chamber between the stem and outer tube; thence forwardly between the outer and inner tubes, and thence rearwardly through the inner tube to the mouthpiece. 1 It willnbe observed that thesmaller portion 13 of the skirt of the hollow plug 11 extends rearwardly beyond the hole5 in the pipe stem. to protect the tube 14 from being burned.
. It will also be observed that the front end of the pipe stem and its metal plug are entirely housed within the pipe bowl, thus protecting the hand of the pipe user from contact therewith and also preventing any liability of the unintentional removal of the plug from the pipe stem with its outer absorbent tube.
To replace the absorbent -tubes, the pipe stem will be removed from the pipe bowl and the front end plug may then be removed with its outer absorbent tube. The absorbent tube may then be removed and another one inbe removed and'replaced. The parts may then be reassembled for use.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I\ claim is 1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl-having a transverse recess intersecting the tobacco chamber and extending partway through the bowl, a hollow stem inserted into 'said recess and having a hole through its top side wall to open communication between its interior and the tobacco chamber, a removable mouthpiece for the rear end of the stem, a removable hollow metal plug for the front end of the stem, removable inner and outer he a absorbent tubes carried by the mouthpiece and plug respectively, to form a tortuous passagefrom the tobacco chamber to the mouthpiece, the hollow metal plug having a two diameter skirt, the larger portion of which fits within the stem and the smaller portion of which is spaced from the inner Wall of the stem.
2. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl hav-v ing a transverse recess intersecting the tobacco chamber and extending partway through the bowl, a hollow stem inserted into said recess and having a hole through its top side wall to open communication between its interior and the tobacco chamber, a removable mouthpiece for the rear end of the stem,
a removable hollow metal plug for the front end of the stem, removable inner and 'outer absorbent tubes carried bythe mouthpiece and plug respectivel to form a tortuous passage from the to acco chamber to the mouthpiece, the hollow metal plug having a two diameter skirt, the larger portion of which fits within the stem and thesmaller 'portion of which is spaced from the inner wall of the stem and extends rearwardly be yond the hole in the stem for protecting the outer absorbent tube from being burned.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this th day of February, 1926. NATHAN FRIEDMAN.
